Special
ParticipantSo I returned to the other forum after a long absence and thought it was strange there was nothing going on until I came across this.
Have started golf back up and want to document it here to try and motivate myself to stick to it and improve. The goal for me has always been to break 90, I have never done it despite shooting 90 on the dot several times but going back 6-7 years ago now. Since then have probably played max 5 times a year and worked on nothing so have always had a huge slice.
I’ve had 2 lessons now and essentially re building my swing to fix 2 issues I have, opening the club face and casting hitting from right to left. Lessons have gone well so will be practicing hard in the next couple weeks before my 3rd one. Will also be signing up to a club for the first time ever.
Lets see how this goes.

ParticipantYeah the old home is scarcely populated at present. A few old hard heads who refuse to leave, but when the place shuts the doors as is expected they too will end up here most likely. Welcome to the new hacienda, there is a story behind this place so take the time to read why it was developed. Good luck with your endeavours to break 90. Rarely do it myself these days, but it is a good feeling. Which state are you based in??? and have a look at the Lets Play thread for the upcoming Nationals in NSW. It’s hoot and a grand way to meat the most of the zanier inmates of this asylum.

ParticipantGood luck! As long as you manage to keep the ball in play off the tee (most of the time) breaking 90 should be achievable with the mindset you have sounds like. Just remember to practice your short game as well and not just pound balls at the range!
I’ve broken par a few times and my swing is not exactly a thing of beauty. (Just ask the poor souls that have had to put up with me at ISG and L4G events.)

Where can I find a thread or two with the info on why this was started up?
I’m based in Vic, south east suburbs to be more exact!

Just click on the ‘About’ tab at the top in the header. Plenty of Vics in the place. Check out the Vic OOM games as well. Play a few rounds with those blokes and you’ll soon get a feel for how the rest of us are. Well most anyways.

ParticipantHit the range today after my lesson Monday. Lesson Monday was working on swing path hitting in to out. Was using obstacles to ensure i don’t cut across it.
Today at the range had a bucket next to the ball that if i was even just a fraction out to in would hit it. Didn’t hit it once and when I got the swing right was hitting draws which I’ve never seen before in my life. Was plenty of miss hits but working on things that are very new to me so am expecting that until it feels more natural.
Good progress!

It is a great feeling when you can draw a shot on command after all that effort. Congratulations!
Have a look at Mike Melaska’s You Tube video on grip. it can make closing the club face to square at impact a lot easier if you know how to measure if your grip is strong enough. Even though I was getting draw shape with irons, hybrids and fairway woods, it was eluding me with the Driver. Mike’s advice on grip was the missing link for me.June 25, 2020 at 8:39 am #12209Commish

It may have been the missing link for you, but that may not be the case for Special. He seems to be going OK with the advice his coach is giving him at present. Perhaps he should continue on that path and see what eventuates before he starts doing the
‘You Tube Tango’. No better way to get confused than having 25 different video experts telling you 25 different things to all achieve the same result. Funnily enough, you end up 2 steps forward – 1 step back.June 26, 2020 at 10:50 pm #12246xrman
ParticipantFair comment Commish, however the difference with the Melaska video is that he explains why a stronger grip helps as well as he shows how to test whether your grip is actually doing what you think it is. I have been told to use a strong grip by my coach and i thought I was doing it as per instruction. No-one had shown me how to check whether it was working in squaring the club face at full arm extension. I am sure Special can choose whether or not he wants to use Melaska’s advice/ teaching pearls of wisdom, as a well as continuing with his personal coach.

Are you using your left or right hand to get a strong grip?

Left hand to control the face and right hand to supply the power, or lack thereof into the back of the ball.
Previously I was using both hands rotated around the shaft possibly by equal amount and it didn’t work that well for me. As you mentioned previously , ” for me” doesn’t mean it is a universal fix. Having said that my golfing buddy in Texas and I were both having a case of the persistent pushes and this changed helped us both. It is so frustrating when you are trying all the theory ( from You Tube granted) and yet it doesn’t work reliably. No amount of video swing analysis would indicate a grip fault to a layman , but an experienced coach should be able to pick it, maybe. A one on one lesson situation should be a quicker way to identify and correct a grip fault, in that you change the grip and see the ball flight changes within a few swings.
For a lot of people getting a one on one lesson is difficult. Other than expense, finding a compatible coach, accessibility can be an issue. For me I can’t visit my coach until the S.A. border opens fully. It is a 220 km round trip and a whole day allocated to the exercise. It costs even more when my wife tags along and goes shopping!

ParticipantIsn’t the right hand meant to be passive??
June 28, 2020 at 10:50 am #12290Special
ParticipantI think sometimes grip is part of my issue with opening the face so will check it out. I do watch a lot of YouTube just because I enjoy it but at the moment trying to just focus on what my coach is telling me in my lessons that’s enough for my tiny brain to handle !
Finally signed up after 10+ years of playing golf sporadically, to a club for the first time ever. Could only get on a 6 day so on the waiting list for 7 day. Have my first practice around of 9 with a mate this arvo who signed up with me.
