Golf Queensland announces 2015 QAS Squad

Golf Queensland has today announced the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) Golf Squad for 2015, with two new faces joining seven existing squad members.

Rebecca Kay (Coolangatta-Tweed) and Anthony Quayle (Sanctuary Cove) will join Jack Sullivan (Palmer Gold Coast), Cory Crawford (Sanctuary Cove), Blake Proverbs (Pacific), Amy Walsh (Palmer Gold Coast), Taylor Macdonald (Redcliffe), Jake McLeod (Royal Queensland) and Gennai Goodwin (Indooroopilly) to make up this year’s squad.

The QAS Golf Program is aimed at players who have the potential and commitment to succeed at elite level competition golf.

The selection of squad members is based on recent state, national and international tournament performances as well as their commitment to continuing development in all aspects of their games, including technical, physical and mental.

Golf Queensland Head Coach Tony Meyer said the QAS Squad forms the pinnacle of the Golf Queensland High Performance Program.

“There is no doubt that all players selected this year have earned their spots on the squad,” Mr Meyer said.

“We have a fantastic group of athletes in the squad and I’m looking forward to working with them.”

“We are also extremely lucky to have a great team of coaches and sports science providers which the elite athletes will have access to.”

“It is an excellent opportunity for the athletes to improve their skills and work towards their goals of becoming elite professionals.”

The QAS Golf Program had a number of standout achievements in 2014, specifically through Cameron Smith (GA/QAS rookie squad Member), Aaron Wilkin and Cory Crawford.

Smith had a breakout year in the Professional ranks earning rookie of the year honours on the Australasian PGA and Asian Tours.

Wilkin successfully transitioned from the amateur to professional ranks following a Top 10 finish in the PGA of Australasia Tour School, earning himself a strong tournament exemption status for 2015.

Crawford improved his World Amateur Golf Ranking in 2014 from 701 to inside the top 70. Further to this, Crawford was selected in the Golf Australia National Squad.

The squad members train together three times a week and have the opportunity to travel both interstate and overseas to compete against some of the best amateurs and professionals.

The 2015 QAS Squad is proudly supported by Fayde Apparel.

The Queensland Academy of Sport Golf Program is conducted with the assistance of the Queensland Government and forms the pinnacle of the Golf Queensland High Performance Program.

The QAS Golf Program, which commenced in July 2001, is designed to assist Queensland’s most talented amateur players in reaching their full potential within the amateur golf ranks.

QAS scholarship holders have access to world-class coaching and support services including sport science, strength and conditioning, medical, career and education in addition to financial support for competition and training costs, depending on the level of their scholarship.
