SCGA fundraising tournament honors S.C. ‘First Lady of Golf’
The Women’s South Carolina Golf Association’s Junior Foundation will hold its largest fundraiser, the Jane Covington Invitational, on April 20 at Orangeburg Country Club.
Twenty-nine teams of four will compete in a captain’s choice format. This is the second consecutive year that the event has been sold out.
Through the generosity of South Carolina golf clubs, each team will receive a foursome of golf as a prize. Participants also receive tee gifts, breakfast, lunch and on-course beverages. There will be a silent auction and a basket raffle.
Three junior girls who have received assistance from the WSCGA Junior Foundation will participate as greeters and hit a ceremonial first tee shot. The juniors are Jamie Hubbard (Hardeeville), Bethany Bonham (Bluffton) and Gracyn Burgess (Leesville).
This invitational has been named in the honor of Jane Covington, a lifetime resident of Orangeburg and a member of the Orangeburg Country Club. Jane began playing golf at the age of 13, played on the high school boys’ team, was a member of the men’s golf team at USC, was a cum laude graduate of USC, was the first WSCGA President, and the inaugural WSCGA State Champion (and again four more times), was inducted into the SC Golf Hall of Fame in 1978 and is widely known as “The First Lady of Golf in S.C.”
The WSCGA Junior Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote junior golf in South Carolina by providing golf scholarships, playing and teaching the game of golf, and promoting amateur golf. In 2015 the foundation will support the South Carolina High School Golf League, which consists of more than 700 junior girls; host a High School Invitational in September; support the GA/SC Junior Girls Challenge Matches; and give financial assistance to juniors to help support the growth of their golf game.
