Rio Reward for Mission Hills Golfathon Champion

An Olympian feat is deserving of an Olympian award. No wonder, therefore, that 12 year-old young golfer Wen Haoran was celebrating after emerging triumphant in the 12th Mission Hills Golfathon Grand Final – one of the most gruelling tests of golf.As a reward for his success, young Wen can now begin thinking about packing his bags to Rio de Janeiro to attend the 2016 Olympiad when golf will make an historic return to the showpiece sporting event after an absence of more than a century.

After being congratulated on his victory by Mission Hills Vice Chairman Tenniel Chu, Wensaid: “It’s a wonderful thrill to win the Mission Hills Golfathon Grand Final – and what an amazing prize. To be at the Olympics is an experience that I’m sure I will never forget.”

As well as his Olympic ground ticket prize, the champion won a Golf and Hotel Package at Mission Hills Haikou including a two-night stay in a Spa Villa and two rounds of golf.  

On a thrilling day of golf over the David Leadbetter-designed course at Mission Hills’ Dongguan venue, Wen topped the leaderboard with an 18-hole stroke play score of 77.

A total of 106 players made it to the Grand Final via the qualifiers, which began in May. They included representatives from no fewer than eight countries and regions – mainland China, Finland, France, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan.

All Divisional winners received a Mission Hills Haikou Grand Deluxe Package while the first runners-up in each category won a Mission Hills Haikou Grand Premiere Package.

One prize that was not claimed was the one-night stay in the Presidential Suite at Mission Hills Dongguan Resort which was on offer to anyone who made a hole-in-one.

Launched in 2004 to celebrate Mission Hills’ recognition as the world’s largest golf club, the Golfathon has become an annual tradition that offers entrants the opportunity to play 10 of the club’s award-winning golf courses in either Shenzhen or Dongguan or Haikou.

Over the past 10 years, the Mission Hills Golfathon has attracted nearly 50,000 participants from more than 30 countries – males and females ranging in age from five to 80. All those who complete the 180-hole challenge are awarded a participation certificate.

Tenniel Chu said: “Once more the response we have received to the Golfathon has been overwhelming. The tournament is truly a test of skill and endurance. We believe it’s one of golf’s most unique events.”
