Tom Watson Junior Golf Course Completed in Maryville, Mo.
The nine-hole golf course at Mozingo Lake Recreation Park will be ready to open in the summer of 2015, and will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The Tom Watson Junior Golf Course at Mozingo Lake Recreation Park in Maryville, Mo., is now complete, the Shenandoah (Iowa) KMA Land reported.
“It’s done,” Assistant City Manager Ryan Heiland said. “All major construction is complete. All the greens have been seeded and all of the fairways are seeded. Really at this time of the year it finishes up at a perfect time, because we’ll just let the seeds go dormant. Then we’ll turn the irrigation system on, weather dependent, in mid-March to late-March and really start that grass growing for next year.”
Heiland adds when the junior course is ready to open, a ribbon cutting ceremony will take place,KMA Land reported.
“There will be one at some point, that will take some coordination,” Heiland said. “Hopefully we can get Tom Watson up here for that. That would be exciting if we could, but he’s pretty busy so we’ll see. There will definitely be a ribbon cutting though.”
Heiland said the course will open in the summer of 2015, KMA Land reported.
In other business related to the two golf courses at Mozingo, the council purchased new irrigation control system equipment during Monday night’s city council meeting. The council agreed to execute a contract with Professional Turf Products L.P. for installation. Heiland says the new irrigation system gives better control of turning irrigation on and off, KMA Land reported.
“The control system is really what allows us essentially just to turn it on and off,” Heiland said. “This is a new kind system. It is a satellite controlled system. It allows us to pinpoint irrigate. So if there’s a green that needs some irrigation, we don’t have to turn on the entire irrigation for the hole, we can just turn it on for that specific green.”
He adds the new irrigation system initially will be used primarily for the new Tom Watson Junior Course, KMA Land reported.
“Fully for the new 9-hole course, and then for the first 3-holes on the 18.” Heiland said. “And then moving forward, we’ll start budgeting to replace eventually so that the entire 18-hole course is on that new irrigation.”
Heiland said the new system will cost $13,387, KMA Land reported.
