On Sunday 1^st September, Newcastle Golf Club conducted it’s inaugural Dog Day, following the successes of Royal Adelaide Golf Club’s Dog Day earlier in the year. As far as we know, this is the first official Dog Day to be held by a Golf Club in NSW. We held the event on Fathers Day in an effort to attract families, and the event also crossed paths with international dog day which was Monday last week, the 26^th.

Over 35 humans and 12 pups attended the event in perfect Spring conditions following the heavy downpour (nearly 100mm) in the days prior.

Whilst we were admittedly a little nervous leading into the dog day and as the afternoon approached, the day ended up running pawesomely. Golf and golf clubs are often associated with an endless number of rules and regulations, and we were trying to lead the way as a progressive Club, attempting to break these barriers down..

It was a very innovative event, and attracted a great mix of members and their families, including children, husbands, wives, mothers, fathers and grandparents. One of the Club’s strategic objectives is to “better promote a family friendly culture”, and this event assisted our objective of doing just that..

Surprisingly, there were no accidents, and no little dogs were eaten by larger dogs during the course of the afternoon.

The event was a 9 Hole Shootout Stableford (winner takes all), shotgun start from 3pm. Drinks and a casual BBQ dinner followed golf and everyone including a dozen tired pups hung around to enjoy the sunset.”
