Changing Face Of Australian Amateur Golf

Changing Face Of Australian Amateur Golf
Australian men’s amateur golfing stocks have been depleted somewhat in recent months as those near the top of the amateur rankings make the transition to the professional game but the young man who has led the way over the last twelve months or so in Australian amateur golf, Ryan Ruffels, remains as not only Australia’s leading male amateur but one of the best in the world.

17 year old, Ruffels, born and raised until the age of 11 in the United States but now based in Melbourne, is currently 14th in the world amateur ranking after being inside the top ten for much of the year.

Ruffels began the year well when he led the qualifiers at the Australian Amateur Championship before being bundled out in the round of 16, then finished 3rd at the Tier Two PGA Tour of Australasia’s Victorian Open.

He won the Australian Boys Amateur Championship by a massive 15 shots, then played a key role in Victoria’s win at the Australian Interstate Teams Championship.

A relatively unproductive trip to the UK was followed by a series of events during the US summer where a Quarter Final finish at the Western Amateur Championship was his best although making the 36 hole cut at the PGA Tour’s Canadian Open was no doubt a highlight after being granted an invitation and opening with a round of 66.
