First NZ foot golf course tested in Timaru
Foot Golf started in the Netherlands in 2009 and spread through Europe arriving in Australia three months ago and New Zealand today. The aim of the sport is to kick a football ball into a hole using the same rules as golf.
The first Foot Golf course in New Zealand has been tested today by the public at St Andrews, Timaru.
Foot Golf is played in 26 countries and is an amalgamation of golf and football.
At St Andrew’s Golf Club just south of Timaru, 18 holes additional to golf have been created on pars of the course for Foot Golf.
The holes are lined and the pars are set at different levels to golf.
For example par 3 Foot Golf is a 60m distance whereas in golf par 3 is about 170m to 180m. Par 5 golf is 450m to 520m while Foot Golf players can kick the ball from 240m.
Club vice president Don McLean said 50 players checked out the 2.3km course today and said they loved the concept.
Both games can be played at the same time using traditional golf etiquette.
”It’s a great family thing and very affordable … it takes about two to two-and-a-half hours,” McLean said.
