Glow in the dark golf on offer at Edwalton Golf Course
Golfers will be taking a shot in the dark tomorrow as they prepare to tee-off on a glow stick-lit green.
Edwalton Golf Course, in Wellin Lane, is hosting a Night Golf competition with players, balls and the fairway illuminated by fluorescent sticks.
Course manager Cai Bawden hopes the unusual event – the first of its kind at the club – will shake off the “misguided” opinion that golf is just for older men.
He said: “It is a bit different and will hopefully draw new people to the sport.”
It will take two hours to set up the nine holes and hazards.
Mr Bawden said: “We’ve bought hundreds of glow sticks which we have to position so that is going to take some time. Tidying up will be a big job too especially if the glow sticks aren’t glowing anymore.”
Up to 36 players, in teams of four, can take part. Mr Bawden is also encouraging people to dress up to add to the sense of fun. An average skilled player can normally finish the course in 90 minutes but Mr Bawden anticipates it could take an hour longer due to the restricted visibility.
The light sticks – which are inserted into the golf balls to make them glow green – last up to eight hours.
The manager said: “It could take all night, who knows, it’s all new to us, but at least if a ball goes into the lake we will be able to see where it is.”
Tom Williams, of Gamston, has been playing golf for five years said he’d never seen anything like this before.
The 18-year-old said: “I think it’s going to be a great laugh.
“I haven’t got any tactics I can think of but I’m not in it to win it, I’m just taking part to have fun.”
John O’Kane, manager of nearby pub The Goose, said: “I think it sounds like a really fun a interesting idea if not an easy way to lose a lot of golf balls.”
Places are still available for the competition which plans to run from 6pm to 8.30pm. Tickets are £15 per player which includes a meal afterwards.
