Australia has won the right to host the 2022 World Deaf Golf Championship.

The World Deaf Golf Federation announced that Royal Pines on the Gold Coast will be the host club after a joint proposal from Deaf Golf Australia and Golf Australia.

But GA national inclusion manager Christian Hamilton said the successful bid was a result of many more organisations pitching in.

“It’s a collaboration of Deaf Golf Australia, Deaf Sports Australia, RACV Royal Pines, Golf Queensland and the City of Gold Coast coming together to show what we can do as a team to deliver a high-class event,” Hamilton said.

“We are very excited to bring such a high calibre of golf to a course that has been the host of no less than the Australian PGA Championship for the past five years.

“The 72-hole championship only happens once every two years, so we really encourage people to come out and support all the incredible athletes when the world’s best converge on the Gold Coast in four years.”

Deaf Golf Australia president Wendy Home was delighted the tournament would make a return visit.

“It’s the second time the championship will be held in Australia after the successful WDGC event that was hosted at the Joondalup Golf Resort in Perth in 2008,” Home said.

The announcement was celebrated by Australia’s ambassador to Ireland, Richard Andrews, who was present at a reception in Dublin where a 15-strong Aussie team is about to tee off in this year’s championship at Carton House, the host of next month’s World Amateur Team Championship.

Andrews said he was “thrilled” to have the 2022 decision announced at such an important time for all the athletes in Ireland.
