Growing the game on and off the green

There’s something for everyone when teaching on and off the green in Perth. Local school students from Thornlie Christian College in Southern River, have recently been through the paces of learning golf in different settings. Whilst 95% of these children have never played golf before this gave them an opportunity to try it in the most engaging way possible.

Ron Trezise from SNAG Golf WA and Justine Mamootil from Par 3 Indoor Golf teamed up to bring the ultimate 6 week session of golf fun for over 400 children ranging from years 7 through to 11.

The program was structured so that they could learn within the school environment using SNAG equipment. SNAG® incorporates developmentally appropriate equipment and instruction that will allow golf to be learned and played in non-traditional venues. It has its own simplified rules and terminology that adds fun to the learning and playing experience.

The children were given the basic fundamentals of stance, grip, posture and alignment whilst having the time of their life, hitting big bulls eye targets and the ever so famous SNAGman. Suddenly these children were asking when Ron and Justine were coming back. Following basic instruction they were moved onto 9 holes on the school oval, learning to play best ball with fellow teammates. After two sessions of playing 9 holes and getting the concept, they were transitioned indoors to Par 3 Indoor Golf onto the virtual simulators. It’s here the kids got really excited. The enthusiasm to outdrive fellow school mates and the determination to get the stance and swing right proved in positive results of some fairly long drives.

When asking the children what they thought of golf, it was a refreshed sense of “I love it”. “It’s so cool, we have had so much fun and seeing the information on the virtual simulators about our distances make it’s pretty cool”. Ethan…

Ron and Justine are excited to be able to offer a difference in golf education, because these children really have never had the opportunity to learn golf before, and get so much out of it, whilst having fun. Suddenly there is ambition from these children to keep going on with the program after school. Justine Mamootil comments “I am fairly confident that we will have some students come back for some more fun with their parents as well”.
