Here are 5 things we’d like to see happen in Women’s Golf

Now that the Royal & Ancient Golf Club has voted to allow women as members — hey, it only took 260 years — let’s daydream a little about five things we’d like to see happen in women’s golf, hopefully quicker than 2½ centuries from now.

A professional women’s event at Augusta

The LPGA’s energetic and effective commissioner, Mike Whan, “mentions” this annually to the Lords of Augusta, and many of us who cover golf have brought it up over the years. When it comes to Augusta National, it’s difficult to know what the odds of a women’s tournament are. It could range from “maybe someday” to “no way in hell.”

If it were going to happen, it would have to fit into Augusta National’s calendar and be far from the Masters in April. In other words, September or October. It would be different seeing the course in autumn.

Maybe an annual tournament won’t happen, but how about one of the LPGA’s team events — the Solheim Cup or the International Crown? The former is a well-established event that dates to 1990. The latter just started this summer.
