Make golf lessons work for your game

There are many reasons why golfers seek out instruction. For instance, they may want to be able to hit the ball farther, straighter and more consistent. Does that sound familiar?

On the other hand, why do most golfers choose not take golf lessons? That’s right. There are more golfers playing the game right now who have never had a golf lesson, nor do they want one.

The most common myth about golf instruction is: “I have heard I will get worse before I get better.” I can tell you that what I know from giving thousands of golf lessons throughout my career is that the outcome for each person is going to be different.

What do you have to do in order to make golf lessons work best for you? First of all you need to know what you want in your golf game. The most challenging golf lessons to give are the ones where students don’t know what they want. You need to come to lessons with a goal.

Once you have a goal laid out on the table and the instructor gives you a game plan of how to reach that goal, the ball is back in your court. You must take the information the coach has given you and make it work for you.

You now have two choices. Practice the changes and put them into play or just play with no practice.

The reason many students get worse before they get better is they will play through the changes. When you play through swing changes, you can get better. But many people get frustrated in this process and it can back fire. You get frustrated and go back to what you used to do.

The choice is clear and hard. In order to succeed when taking golf lessons you must: Know your goal, get a clear understanding and guidance from your instructor, and then practice to put the changes into play.

By following this formula for success, you will enjoy the process of taking golf lessons and see the results on the course!
