Speedgolf World Champs start Sunday

The 2014 Speedgolf World Championship will be held at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, Bandon, OR, USA on October 26-27, 2014.

Speedgolf is a game requiring accuracy and speed. Executive Director of Speedgolf International Scott Dawley describes the modern day, time efficient worldwide sport as one that “unites two of the largest athletic communities in the world, golf and running.”

This will be the third annual Speedgolf World Championship and the first time Australian speedgolfers are competing across all divisions.

Scott announced the 2014 Speedgolf World Championship to be a field of 65 players from across the world including Australia, Japan, Sweden, Iceland and the United Kingdom. This year, for the first time a Women’s Speedgolf World Champion will be crowned, we have Nicole Williamson from Australia competing.

Mitch Williamson from Orange, New South Wales qualified for the professional/elite division. Mitch will be competing against the world’s best such as current Speedgolf world champion Robert Hogan from Ireland. Some serious challenge is expected from Olympic medalist in middle and long distance running Bernard Lagat from the USA and 1500m Olympic silver medalist Nick Willis from New Zealand among many more elite athletes in this year’s field.

“We know that Australian Mitch Williamson is one of the fastest runners in the pro/elite division so we are excited to see what he can do against the Olympians.” Virginia Deigan, founder of Speedgolf Australia.

Golf Australia Golf Development Director, Cameron Wade, said, “Golf Australia is thrilled that Australia for the first time will have speed golfers competing across all divisions including women’s in this year’s World Championships. We wish the team the best of luck.”

Wade added that “GA views Speed Golf as an excellent example of an innovative way of engaging in the game that contributes to growing participation.”
