    Welcome aboard Wombat,

The problem seems to be that Golf Australia get confused about what can and cannot happen as per the advising of respective State Health Ministers, they then pass on that confused information to us plebs. NSW closed for less than 24 hours once it was realised that NSW Health HAD NOT suggested that courses close down. Mind you it was only a recommendation from GA, not a directive that they do so, but the way it was worded seemed to be pretty specific that clubs close. As of today we are back in play (if the board at the course declares so) with no more than 2 in a group (doesn’t matter who they are), no more than one in a cart, pins to remain in the hole, rakes out of bunkers with sand to be smoothed out as best as possible with foot or club. Relief (placing of ball) available for balls that are in unrepaired portion of the bunker and of course that all players remain a minimum of 1.5 metres apart during the round. Oh and you score your own card with a verbal agreement between player and marker on the score achieved for the hole.

I think this is really poor by the NSW body. The PM has repeatedly said people should stay in their homes unless they have to go out for necessity. Exercise is allowed, but the exercise part of golf is the walk, not the playing of the ball. If people live close to a golf course by all means go and walk it. But the purpose is people stay near their house for exercise to limit movements. Driving to the golf club might mean a trip to a supermarket or chemist on the way home, hence further spread or risk of infection.

Even if you obey ALL the restrictions and advisings, you stand more chance of becoming infected by going to the Doctors, supermarket, chemist, petrol station, WORK!!! than you do of playing golf in a group of two touching nothing but your own gear, which you have cleaned with alcohol wipes pre and post round…

Just received an email from My club (SLGC), that we can resume playing social golf in groups of two, as of tomorrow.
Lot’s of restrictions, NO comp, no pro shop, no alcohol, no practice range, no congregating.
Members only and must book, group of two, prior to playing.
For me it means I can take a walk on the course with my wife or mate, as long as I book.
Great News, hope other courses can follow.

You are looking at it from the wrong perspective in my view. It’s not about what’s more risk it’s about what’s appropriate. Cricket practice nets and golf practice cages in parks are being closed too. It’s a principle – stay home unless it’s necessary to go out. I love golf. But I can’t say that it’s necessary.

Hi guys, new member here, just spirited myself across from the other side.
Just curious as to what is happening in other clubs as of today, april 1st.
Our course remains open from last competition last Friday but restricted to two family members only.
Which means 2 mates cannot go out for a social hit.
Today I heard from a mate in a Perth metropolitan club that, as from tomorrow, they can go out in 2’s and they don’t have to be in the same family.
My club (regional WA) is adamant that we CANNOT do this.
Hope to get some clarification on this. I know Golf Australia keep changing things.
    Cheers.

Welcome to the newest golf forum madhouse on the planet.

Before the shutdown Elanora was trialing the Miscore app, removes the need to touch scorecards. Also puts the responsibility of lodging the score directly in the hand of the players.

From all reports it was a great success, some very positive feedback from members.

I dare say it’s the way of the future.

I’m wondering if Dan the Man will follow suit for Vic clubs?
His approach to this whole thing has certainly been hard line to date, so I’m inclined to think not

Driving to the golf club might mean a trip to a supermarket or chemist on the way home, hence further spread or risk of infection.

Which is the greater risk?? The drive to the course on your own in your own car? The round of golf where you are virtually isolated in fresh air? Or the trip to the Chemist, Supermarket, Workplace, Petrol Station which you will do more often?

My perspective may be slightly askew in your eyes, but I don’t believe so. If I believed that attending a golf course to play with my son was more of a risk to myself and my family than visiting a supermarket for 15 minutes that would put me in closer proximity to 20x’s more people, then I would not play golf. As it is, I do not think that is the case, so I shall continue to play while I can.

The whole point of this is that the power for individuals to make their own risk assessment is being diminished, rightly or wrongly, because people kept doing dumb stuff.
People are supposed to stay home.

I would agree that its right to feel somewhat fortunate to be able to play golf, whilst others cannot enjoy their sports.
Cycling / running is the only other sports that remain acceptable.
I’m going to enjoy the chance to play.

I add that for some people exercise (golf or other) is essential to their well being both physical and mental 🙂

Cranky. I get where you are coming from and can assure you I am not one of those people that do the dumb stuff like some of our beach loving brethren in NSW and no care backpackers. At present, for the passed 4 weeks and into the foreseeable future, I leave the house to shop 2 days a week. Once for my family shop, the other for my mother who is incapable of doing it herself. Other than that to take my wife to a number of medical appointments with her Surgeon, Oncologist and respective scans and treatments. I then have 1 day whereby I get out in the fresh air with one other person for about 3 1/2 hrs a week. If you wish to stay at home fine. Do it. I NEED to get out for my round of golf for my own safety. My missus would cause me severe physical harm if I did not give her that one piece of time away from her.

Spot on the exercise part is definitely the walk and dare I say even if in cart. I’ve heard from clubs with older members that are still coming out to play as its all they have- wifes died or whatever. It’s their one outlet of normality each day or a few times each week. The over 70 issue was not a concern for them.

The mental exercise and some minor social connections are so important for many people in society.

If some people are contained for the 3mth period NSW is stating then we may see more deaths not due to Covid-19 start occurring.

Golf courses, by all means, look to be doing the right thing in how managed in a contained area of so many hectares!

Unfortunately, golf has had a different perspective form nongolfers- ie for rich people, entitles etc instead of the message now should be the benefits, helping people get through this pandemic intact, creating stronger bonds between people etc.

It’s also the possible difference for many to keep a job of some kind or not.

Many clubs will close and not open again ever is my prediction.
