Can break 80
ParticipantPractice
Did manage to get my practice in this week with a visit to the range (albeit after the poor performance on Saturday). I was working on some drills from the Strike Plan, and in particular practicing hitting bad/not centred shots. So hit 10 out of the toe deliberately then similar number out of the heel and so on.
Made for some mild embarrasment at the range hitting shanks and so on. I did find that when I was trying to hit it out of the heel I was actually striking it pretty well, which is weird particularly as I had a couple of half shanks on Saturday in my forgettable round. I did enjoy having particular things to work on at the range as I tend to find hitting balls pretty boring.
Then I went to the putting green to finish off the last couple of items from my level one putting challenge. I had passed the first four sets of drills even though I still had some items left in the fourth set. So I finished those up, and then I just had two drills of lag putting, with the pass requirement to leave 70% of the putts from 35 and 45 feet within 3 feet of the hole. I got 8 out of 10 from 35 feet, and then totally tanked the 45 feet drill, leaving me two putts outside the standard.
It was an interesting exercise in putting under pressure, cause I had in my mind the whole time the response. But it was illustrative that my lag putting from long distance is pretty poor, when compared with my general putting. And that actually does show up in my game – mainly by leaving long putts short. So I have to repeat the level 1 drill, but my plan for this next week is to try and get through the level 1 chipping challenge and see how I measure up there.
Well done Deege what I really like is the practice plan.
most golfers dont practice to a plan, they just beat hundreds of balls at driving range hoping to find the Zen factor or magic move.
keep up good work.
when you play dont worry about end score, focus on your process which you seem to be doing better now, I read a few rounds back where your score was bad but process was good.
keep focused.February 29, 2020 at 5:41 pm #9866deege

ParticipantSo stableford at Rosebud today and the focus was coach’s new game plan. The plan is to par all the par 5s and bogey everything else. That gets me 40 points on my current handicap. I had an okay but unspectacular front nine – a hitler on the second was disappointing but not upsetting, cause both shots were good contact and technique, just caught the lip. Ended up with 15 on the front and 4 down from the game plan perspective but no wipes.
Started the back well with three three pointers in a row had me back to 2 behind the game plan (one of them was the par 4 where I get two shots, so only made up two shots on the plan). Topped the next one off the tee leading to a messy hole and came into the three par 5s in a row back to 4 shots down on the plan. It’s the part of the course where I can capitalise, but the focus on being behind on the plan saved me from focussing on the fact that I was putting together a good back nine. Only managed a double on the first par 5 after I was out of position for the drive. Rolled in a birdie on the next. Managed a bogey on the next, so the par 5s were played in three over. Some work to do there.
Didn’t get out of control. but had a poor bunker based wipe on the last. Was disappointing but left me with 18 points on the back with two wipes, so there were plenty of good shots. So 33 overall, which missed the plan, but was a good round nonetheless.
Driver was awesome all day. Had a few mis-hits while practising the new takeaway. And took a while to get used to taking practice swings, but managed by the end of the round to figure out how it fit into my routine.
All in all pretty happy with the day to score well and hit plenty of good shots while in the middle of changing both my pre-shot routine and my takeaway.

ParticipantAfter my round today went off for a little session at Golf Studio. Wanted to try out both the internal bunker and the trackman on the driving range.
The bunker was better than I expected, but really deep soft sand so will take some getting used to. Tried some chipping off the fake rough grass and was interesting. Then onto the trackman. Was trying to do some practice on my new takeaway to feel a bit more grooved. Was starting to adopt a very Inbee Park slow takeaway which has been what I have been doing with the driver recently. It works for Inbee, so no problems with this plan if it aids in getting everything online.
The trackman is really interesting, but there are a lot of numbers and for a lot of them I don’t know what I should be aiming for. Might schedule another lesson with Coach to see if he can give me some guidance on how to use trackman to its best advantage.
Might even get back to the studio tomorrow for a bit of putting practice. The work that I had done on the technical mats last week really helped my on course thinking today particularly on shorter putts, so already good to see some benefit.

ParticipantTrackman system has SO many numbers, and variables too. I’m surprised the studio doesn’t have a guide or intro lesson for new users etc.
Did you set up each club? What about ball in use? I know from the lessons and fitting I had using one, there was always a process of setting up the club in use and standardisation for ball in use, etc.
Do you get the data from your session?
By the time you realise this part of my signature doesn't say anything it's too late to stop reading it.

The range supplies all the balls, so assume that it is set up for the balls they provide. They had an intro where they showed me how to use the machine. So I set up for particular clubs as I use them. They do send you the data, but I actually haven’t checked to make sure that they sent the session through – you have to sign up for a trackman account.
It’s more the golf geek thing – it gives you so much data and I don’t know what half of it means. I mainly use the shot dispersion thing or take a video to see if I am managing to do the think that my coach wants me to be practising.

ParticipantSo a few weeks off due to some work stuff and back to it today. Back on the coach gameplan to try and get my 40 points, and I managed 41. So that was great. And there was a hitler and a fed ex in there and a couple of three putts.
Really was hitting the ball well today and managed to pull it all together. The driver was great (except for one bad drive but I remembered to take my medicine rather than being a hero and walked off with a bogey). That bogey meant that I played the par 5s in 1 over, so just missed out on coach’s plan. Despite the couple of three putts, my putting was pretty good – could definitely see the benefit of the work on the technique mats at Golf Studio. 33 putts for the day which is above the 30 I am aiming for but not unhappy with that return.
The ball striking was the help though – 5 GIR and a bunch of times was pin high or thereabouts. Hit the green on the 1 ranked hole and three putted to still walk off with 3 points. So those holes are nice. And was in range on some holes which I have never been before. Coming into par 5s with wedges is fun.
And the tale of the tape was 86 off the bat, which is easily my best round of the last 12 months and I think my second best round ever. Using coaches gameplan meant that I wasn’t obsessing about the score because I still had tasks to accomplish (we have three par 5s in a row at the end of our round).
