ParticipantWatched a video from a popular YouTube instructor. And what he is teaching is kinda the new “in” way now. But he promotes an active hand and massive body pivot swing. Where he has people shallow the club massively on the way down. Than at hip high you close the face to square up the club too the finish. At the same time you have to think about squatting and pivoting as hard as you can towards the target. Feeling like your lower body is completely open at impact while doing his hand shallow moves in the swing
Questions ? Who has enough hours in the day to do this ? Especially if we are weekend Warriors

ParticipantWanted to add. What happened to just swing your swing? Keep your head down/ tempo/ swing in balance etc etc … why was the old school teachers that gave out small tidbits the most effective?
How can anyone in this world of amateur golf play well and enjoy the game trying to implement what is popular now?

ParticipantThe old adage of “If it’s not broke don’t fix it”. I tend to avoid the newest and greatest crazes and internet lessons, golf is hard enough already without thinking about too many things when standing over the ball. I don’t have many lessons but when I do it is with the same club pro, he knows my swing and how to get the best out of it. As a result my ball striking is pretty solid and consistent.
Chipping and putting on the other hand ………….

ParticipantI have been watching a number of video “coaches” of late and have come to the decision that they are very good as pro’s trying to tell us that we too can be pro’s if we do the things they say. 95% of the shots they play will do what they want. They are pro’s, that is the way it should happen. I have not seen one say… ” I used to do it this way when I was off a handicap of 18 and this is what I did to get down to 10. Then this is what I did to get down to 3. Then this is what I did to correct something else to get to +6 an then I turned pro. So after all those hours or training and practicing and changing things over a decade or so, I got there. You too can do it in a couple of weeks if you just do what I tell you on YouTube.
Only problem is that they are not there to tell you if you are doing what they recommend correctly. So you just keep on doing the same shit with varying results. Some things work for a while and then disappear, others just make your game worse. My game is total crap at present, I believe because I have bee trying to be what I am not. Trying to understand technical information that I have no idea about, like reverse pivots, hinge stuff, swing path to plane etc etc etc.
I have decided to go back to when I first started playing. There is a white ball on a tee or on the ground. I have a number of clubs in my bag that will allow me to hit the ball varying distances. Select a club that I think will best suit the job at hand from the acquired knowledge of 50 odd years (on and off) of trying to play this game. Hold the club whichever way feels comfortable, swing the club however it gets swung, hit the ball (hopefully) without 27 different thoughts in my head before during and after the shot. Remember my age and swing capacity and don’t try and hit everything as if I was 30 yrs younger. After hitting said ball, walk to wherever the ball may be, select another club and do the same thing again. Repeat over 18 holes, have a couple of beers as I go, and just enjoy. Que Sera Sera. Can’t do any worse. If I do, have a few more beers and try again.

ParticipantI guess the thing that always confused me. Is why I never need a complete ‘overhaul’ lesson when I go fishing? Or when I toss a football or frisbee. Or play on the local softball ? team ?
Why does golf by so many require lessons? Almost like they ingrain it in you. Those other hobbies of mine I’m quite proficient. As so many are. And anyone can pickup a football , softball , fishing line etc .. and be proficient after a very short time of figuring it out on your own. A quick tip or two from friends or colleagues. But golf ?️♀️!! No way. It’s a never ending rabbit hole of delusions, false claims of grandeur. One is always told “ you can’t do it that way”. Or so and so says you have to do this or that. Maybe I’m in the wrong generation of in the know crowd per say. But I still believe teach someone the basics. Posture , grip and alignment and let them have at it. And even the basics are negotiable. As many a fine player has one with a faulty grip, posture or setup. So I throw it at you guys? Why is golf so different than any other sport or hobby we love to do for that matter?

My take on things is that golf and all other ball sports where a secondary implement is involved is different for one main reason. With fishing, throwing a frisbee, throwing a football or softball, the ball or lure leaves your hand and goes in the direction you are sending it. A fishing rod is just an extension of your arm, so same result. Depending on the characteristics of the article being thrown and how it is thrown may cause it to move in direction slightly, but that is intentional because you want it to do that.
With golf, the ball goes wherever the clubface sends it. You are in control of that clubface, but if any part of 12 different body parts aren’t all in synch to get the clubface back to where it needs to be during the swing, then a couple of mm off at impact results in metres difference in where you want the ball to be. The more mm’s the more metres off target, dependent upon the amount of side spin imparted because the clubface was not square at impact. Putting not so much in distance but same result over shorter space. Don’t even get me started on chipping and pitching.
I am trying a new method with my irons on the fairway. (when I am actually on one) Taking 2 clubs more and using a 3/4 punch. Gives me the same distance as a normal swing, but I seem to be able to get the ball to go where I want it. Easy to get a draw as well.
