I’ll just keep practicing the short game – I improved as the round went on and everyone struggled with the chip shots from behind bunkers with the grain into you

Singles will beckon as the confidence builds which is my biggest issue

At this stage, it’s only your short game holding you back – the long game is in fine order.

Lol – sugar plum fairy – pisser

Even sopping wet I’m keen as – I’ll pack spare clothes!

Sound like you’re not really keen you need to be committed.

Who in their right mind plays in the rain?

    Let alone sopping wet!

Up here it is rare to have to play in rain, but if that’s the conditions for the day, so be it. A decent brolly and a wet weather glove is all that is required. Wet weather jackets and pants only make you wet from perspiration.

Besides, if you didn’t play in rain in some locations, you’d hardly ever tee it up.

    Precisely my point.

Why play in rain, when it rarely has to happen up here!

40 weekends a year to play dry.

Sitting out a few days to avoid crotch rot is pretty easy.

Well, unless you like crotch rot.

This game was organised in September, for early November. I had to cancel that one because of some family reasons. So this game was organised in December for yesterday…

I know I’m not going to meet my goal setting targets of 2/4/8 games this year if I bail because I might get wet again after I have had my morning shower.

Well there were a few drops during the round today, to the point where the lightning alarm forced us off the course for 40 minutes or so.

The course was nevertheless in very good conditions and the greens are still firm. The bunkers though were GUR which required a few lob shots over them which cost me a couple of shots. The last few I hit ok though so that was something.

I was off 12 (for some reason despite the SR being 73 so I should have got 13). I had 17 off the back and 18 off the front. 2 pick up wipes were the real disappointment for the round. A 2ft birdie putt on that hole 9 was the highlight.

1 birdie 8 pars 5 bogies 3 doubles (1 pick up) 1 triple (pick up)

12 fairways – great stat but the fairways are very generous but I drove it pretty well. Dropped 1 shot from hitting it into the trees.

9 GIR – actually a pretty solid result and if it had a decent short game I could have had a good score.

1/10 up and down – terrible short game performance on the first hole 10, and on 17, and on 5 were very frustrating. Dropped 9 shots here: 3 LW 3 PW 2 5 iron and 2 Texas – only 1 Texas up and down.

35 putts – 1 3 putt and didn’t miss any short putts but didn’t give myself many short putts for up and downs either. Putter was ok but nothing exciting.

Reasonable round but the short game was shit

Dropping a 7.8 vs what will probably be a played to 12 so I will.go out a bit.

Short game killing you… Be off singles if not for it?

What’s the plan to fix it?

Edit: and yes, what’s with the new system not giving the DSR adjustment. Have the same thing at my home track. Still giving me a daily of 20. Grrr.

    • This reply was modified 5 years, 1 month ago by Hack2489.

The DSR is now a PCC and is applied after all is said and done, affecting the ‘played to’ and hence also your new handicap index.

First up, thank you again so much to Upnin for hosting us. The stories and acceptance and openness is something I am very appreciative of.
Weets is as brilliantly good looking as always.
My day started off interestingly as I arrived and Weeti showed me his and I showed him mine and all of a sudden mine looked like big fat game improvement shovels.
Anyway, that disappointment aside, I soldiered on without a chance to warm up. I had to think back to my last swing in the first week of January to know what sort of form I was in.
Alignment, club rotation and swing out…. simple.

    Referring to the image below.
Starting on the 10th, the plan was was driver long and middle left, it went lefter than middle left, but was still well struck. I was a 3 iron out to get on in two. Along with Weeti we waiting ages for the green to clear only to each not land anywhere near the green. I smashed my 3 iron but turned it over and landed 30m left on the 18th tee block. Easy lob wedge flick up and missed an easy birdie putt for par.
what else was interesting that you’d want to know about… umm, I am not sure. I say that like you were interested in the first hole haha.
I wanted to use my 3 wood on 12 to try and get close to the green, but didn’t turn it over at all and left myself a stupidly tough 40m approach where I reckon I had a 6m landing area. Short of the landing area was down back off that tier of the green and long was down off the of the green. Of that 6m, I needed to land it on the first 1-2m for any chance of it stopping, I landed it closer to the 4 or 5m mark so it rolled off.
Being right off the tee was a bad line in.
The 13th I was too far left and didn’t have a good line in, I thought I smashed my 9 iron perfectly to the fat bit of the green, but no, I was short. Not the hardest chip but I didn’t hit it hard enough.
Then 14 I smashed driver long and left to avoid the big fig tree that Up and Weets wanted to play out of.
The plan on 15 was simple, long and left had side of the fairway. I hit it high, long and right, right into the world’s tiniest pond, dropped, punched a 4 iron 130odd metres to be 113 to the pin. I smashed sand wedge as high as I could straight at the pin which was tucked behind the green side bunker. Easy tap in par here
17, my favourite hole was playing pitching wedge length. Or so I thought. Even though I hit a toe-ish knockdown it landed on and rolled off the back. Me and my good friend Weets then mucked around chipping up and watching them roll back to our feet.
18, the pin was front left so the drive needed to be right of the bunker that was 250 away. So after I hit it straight into that bunker I tried to smash PW just to get it over the lip. I did. Then it landed just short of the green in a GUR’d bunker, dropped out of that and chipped it to a few feet for bookend pars.

It was definitely a tale of hitting the ball reasonably well, but just not in the right spot leaving myself not the easiest chip or putt.

I actually started getting on a roll on the second 9 with a few simple pars in a row before the lightning siren brought us in.
My first tee shot after playing out the rest of that storm hole, my hybrid slipped in my hand and I washed that one.

the par 5, 7th was a very disappointing par. I smashed driver that made an awesome splash in a casual lake, the smashed 3 wood to be just short of the front. I chipped up to 4 feet. I think I hit the putt 2 feet, I probably didn’t actually make it half way.
An unlucky bogey on 8 after missing the green right.
Then on 9, I smashed my driver long and right, in under a tree. All I could do was to try and sling a 5 iron back out to the middle somewhere. I happened to be within a couple of metres of Weets ball. His device he was 140 out and it was like he was throwing darts, his 9 iron landed within a meter. I couldn’t match that, and hit my 8 iron to a meter and a half. Walking off with that tap in bird was a great feeling.

I am pretty sure I say it every single time I play there, well every single time I play golf. I would really love to play there after some sort of game time and/or practice.

Love your work Up, thank you again for hosting us

Love your work Up, thank you again for hosting us – As always a pleasure hosting appreciative guests, and you and Weets are great company.

Keep an eye out for the Clayton’s Challenge events on one Friday a month (stuffed if I know why we hold them, as we certainly don’t need the money) – anyway a great opportunity to unleash your inner masochist and play from the blacks to some really stupid pin placements….if you’re into that sort of thing.

Failing that, I do have the occasional Friday off myself, so we could tee it up around 08:30 – 09:00. Just give me notice and I’ll gladly arrange it:)

This was probably my drive of the day. It’s a tight opening to take driver up the left hand side. Right is the best angle in, especially with the pin tucked back left.
I was 130 out and went pin seeking with 9 iron that just rolled off onto the back fringe for an easy two putt. I say easy two putt, there are no easy two putts at The Flats.

ooh ooh, compare that to my plan. I was all over it like seagull on a chip

Nah not sprinkler heads, I got lucky with the drives bouncing along the concrete paths
