ParticipantLol
That’s an excellent question
I have hit so many crap hybrid and iron shots trying to play safe that I couldn’t even guess at the number
I suspect part of it is trying to hard to hit it straight that we dont make a good swing

KeymasterWhy is it that when we try for a safe shot off the tee, we manage to hook/ slice it into the very trouble were are trying to avoid?
An excellent point.
There are 3 tee shots in particular on my own course that I take a cautious approach to – and often hit poorly because I’m frightened of the consequences of hitting poorly….it’s great logic, isn’t it. So I’ve decided to just try to hit the best shot I can on all 3 (one is a layup par 4 that I’d resorted to 3w off the tee…and STILL managed to stuff it up) and oddly enough that has worked out way better on all 3 holes. Go figure.
For those playing at home, those holes are 5, 14 and 26. One on each layout.

ParticipantAs they say, 70% mental, 30% tactical. Every time I have a thought process either good or bad just before taking my swing…. it happens. Don’t hit it left…. it goes left. I need to clear the water…. it doesn’t. I just need to get over the bunker… it goes in.
It is when I don’t have a thought that generally everything goes fine. Problem is, keeping a clear head is harder than it appears.
Supposedly, it should really be easy for me though, because I am continually told I am a dumb mother farker and have nothing between my ears.

How about reverse psychology?
Don’t hit the green!
Miss the fairway!
Whatever you do don’t hit the flagstick! Can’t hurt?:)

ParticipantI await to be corrected where I am wrong, but like any good Steve Irwin joke it’s all about timing…
If you’re going to try and play it safe with a slower, potentially more “steering” type swing, your hand and arms and hips and power sync and timing will all be out.
All of everything will be expecting to act as it would for a normal timed swing, but when you change one of those things only, you lose the timing.
You might try and slow down your arms, but your hips might still be transitioning like it’s a normal powered swing so you might have to throw your hands to catch up and you’re all out of alignment and timing.
Or you just try and steer with your arms and your hips stall and you flip across it or something silly like that.what about rather than trying slower, “safer” swings with driver, you do drop down to a 4 iron and whack it as hard as you normally would with a very specific target at the distance you want to hit it to.
or if you know that you have a hazard 210m out, and your full well struck 5 iron will max out to 205 so you only mostly sort of 3/4 swing it, how about hitting a full 6 iron that will get you hitting to a target of 190.This isn’t personal par or laying up for safety, this is a mindset where you select the club that you can whack properly and with a full deliberate swing to ensure that all of your timing is N*Sync
Baby, bye bye bye, bye bye

Not sure I understand this bit? Are you talking yards or metres?? I know I’m an old prick but my 5 iron wont go 205 mts if I was hitting down a runway. 😉

ParticipantAlrighty enough of this frivolity, let’s get back and focus on the main point of my drivel and that’s to use your 6 iron to hit to the 190m mark.

Aah yes, but you are a very fine finder of the fairway. That would be my 4h and depending on the width from treeline to treeline, I could be in any part of that.
