Hope so Della – would like to put some more good rounds together

    Think positive Weeti.

I AM going to put more good rounds together!

How about you add another ‘tracking statistic’ to your list? A ‘mental focus’ metric? For example, each hole, each shot, record how you were thinking… Focused on what, and or if errors were due to any doubt / non committed to a shot.

Played at Robina Woods aka Palmer Gold Coast today in overcast and windy – and early on in particular quite brisk conditions. The course was in very good condition with the greens a touch below their usual speed but still very good and the fairways very green and smooth. I do love this golf course – it has excellent variety, rewards some course knowledge, bites bad shots but will reward good ones.

I played a bit haphazardly which mostly showed up in 4 doubles including 1 a wipe. First drive push faded left and wet and the drop was behind trees so had to chip out; excellent PW approach to 8ft almost generated a bogey but not to be. This had me overcompensating and hitting quite a few tee shots and woods right for a while which didn’t help.

    2 birdies 7 pars 5 bogies 4 doubles
    5 over 40 for 18 front
    6 over 42 for 17 back
11 over 82 for 35 overall which will be a good flag – hopefully knocking off around half a shot

9/14 fairways – lots of hybrids off the tee here. As well as the 2 shots dropped on 1 another low pull into trees on 13 cost me a shot off the tee. Some dropped. Overall tee game was decent.

6 GIR – not great but 3 Texas as well which were all just off. A mini driver pulled into trees on 3 cist me, as did a follow up 7i into a tree on the same hole. A bladed PW on 15 was followed by a badly pushed 4i on 15 both costing a shot. So 4 more shots dropped in the long game. But overall the swing is improving and I was happy with it today.

A rare result today with a good score of 1 over my handicap where I dropped more shots from the long game – 7 – than the short game – 6. Birdies were 1 ecah from the long game – PW to 4ft on 3, and short game – Texas dropped on 12.

    5/11 up and downs:
    1/2 LW pitches
    0/1 LW chip
    3/6 PW chips
    3/3 Texas
I hit 2 weak PW chips which was disappointing, but overall continue to be happy with progress on the short game.

30 putts – my TM Corsa Ghost’s 2nd game back in the bag and 2 3 putts but only 1 dropped as the other was from the far and wrong end of a double green so was over 80ft. Also lipped out a 6ft for up and down. So 2 dropped shots.

Happy to post a solid if not spectacular score at a tough course. Feel that things are progressing in a positive way so look forward to more good scores.

Won’t be a game next weekend as we are going camping

    8.8 must feel good Weeti?

So, it does beg the question, what’s changed? What are you doing different? It wasn’t long ago I recall reading about your repeated poo rounds.

Quite a few things but the biggest has been my full swing and Monte Scheinblum’s No Turn Cast training program. Then improved chipping particularly my PW distance control. And last 2 round bringing my old TM Corsa Ghost mallet back into play along with my setup changes based on some instruction from Padraig Harrington.

I first saw Monte’s NTC drill a few years back and experimented a bit with it as a full swing thought but couldn’t find a groove with the longer clubs. The drill was aimed at breaking the idea of holding the lag which was prevalent. I felt it had potential and Monte must have too as a few weeks ago he released an extended instruction pack based on it. I’ve been working on it and got a video analysis done by him a few weeks back. The swing has been pretty solid since, steady improvement. Apart from the round at Nooda Springs where I tried something and it gave me the hooks badly – so I scrapped that.

The power is starting to come back now and my video self assessment shows things slowly moving in the right direction. He diagnosed my inside takeaway and over swinging of the arms as my only major fault so been working on that. That fault led to the right arm not reconnecting so that’s the video test I’ve focussed on – along with a check point mid backswing that my hands are about directly under my right shoulder. They are still too far behind but getting better slowly.

Chipping has basically been an steady improvement over time and the touch is starting to get there leaving more balls in the 6ft circle. Still a long way to go with LW to get confidence – I still take PW at times that LW would be better because of confidence.

The putter change involved determining where I need to stand to see the line properly, and I need to stand quite a long way from the ball. That wasn’t going great with the Nike blade putter so swapped in the TaylorMade Corsa Ghost putter and that is better.

Hopefully I can bed down the improvements in all these areas, get the driving a bit more reliable with the NTC thought, and then look to take another step up with the short game and get down around the 6s.

And of course have a par round.

And yeah – 8.8 feels very good. Under the old systems 0.93 multiplier it would be about 8.2 which is getting close to my previous best of 8.0. If I get to 8.5 that will be a new record mathematically.

Then we will see about getting it further down.

Sunday I had 4 doubles. 3 were set up by bad drives so more driver work at the range this week. I’ve hit it low a lot lately, and I also have a push fade mishit that makes me nervous when there is big trouble right. No surprises though – driver is usually a challenge when you’re making a swing change.

Sounds like you’ve been investing time and $$$ into your swing. What’s that old saying, doing same thing expecting different results?

Negative or doubt type thoughts cost me majorly, it’s one thing I’m really working on ATM and seems to be working. If you’ve got any hint of right side trouble and doubt that’ll cost for sure … Rotella’s advice is play with what you’ve got on the day, but always have a shot to play good, NOT to avoid trouble. That’s the big thing for me, as I tend to have too much doubt or negative thoughts about past misses etc.

I’m now also using one of his other ideas for stat tracking. Focus on good not bad. Record FIR, GIR putts under 2 but not the misses and use a post shot routine to absorb the feeling of a good strike / shot. So build confidence rather than focus on errors. Early days for me.

I feel comfortable with my mental approach – I have my keys for my setup and my swing thoughts I work through in my routine. I take my score seriously so I take each shot seriously.

But I am reasonably good at letting go after a poor shot and focussing on the what next.

Interesting thoughts about the positive stats, which I do keep. But my focus positively is on the final score and my handicap. Many ways to make a good score with poor stats.

If I was gunna keep stats to be positive about I think they would be:
TSIP: Tee shots in play – tee shot ends up in a good position for the next shot (ucky bounces off trees don’t count)
IPIR: In position in regulation – GIR or straight forward Texas or chip shot for next shot
UDB: Up and downs basic – the ones from TSIP above which should be very high conversion
UDD: Up and downs difficult – did I hit a solid quality shot from a difficult position (this would include bunker shots) even if I didn’t get up and down
Putts would be something like 2 for every GIR or UDD, and 1 for every UDB inside 6ft

    Something to think about
