Finished with 19 front and 18 back at Redcliffe off 12, which was good enough to win our group of 14
3 birdies 6 pars 5 bogies 3 doubles 1 triple
9/14 fairways – apart from holes 14 15 and 16 where it went AWOL and cost me 2 shots the driver was very solid today – a nice gentle fade most of the time which suits Redcliffe. Also dropped a shot from a poor chip out that left me needing another after the bad drive on 15.
6 GIR – a slightly disappointing number given the number of fairways hit but I also had 6 others that were quite close so not too bad. Only real shockers were a 6i on 9 that still left a reasonable chip but should have been better. Only dropped shot from a full swing was a 5i that hit a tree but that was after a bad topped drive and average mini driver on 16 left me trying to thread it between the trees.
6/12 up and downs – 50% isn’t too bad but given 6 of them were Texas wedges it should have been a bit better. Not too bad though.
33 putts – 4 3 putts but also dropped 2 long ones including one for birdie made up a little for it. Should have been 2 better after the first 2 holes if the putter played nicely. Lagged some long ones nice and close which was good but 4 is too many 3 putts even if you have quite a few long ones.
Overall played well and got down to 11.7 which is a 0.6 drop – finally. Redcliffe was is excellent condition especially given the water situation up here. Always enjoy what is a very good layout.
Ocean Shores Back Marker on Friday will be a real test.
How come you’ve got the Friday off? We could have played The Flats – all guest days days this time of year……oh well next year.

That’s not good to hear
It’s a little hard to say how long we will stay after because it’s a late start at 12 and we will have a 90+ minute trip home. Given I expect that the round will be slow being stroke and back markers we may leave straight after.
It’s a car pool so not in my control!

I’m 20 mins North. I’ll see what the family plans are, as I can shoot down in the middle of the day and catch up pre-round.
Also, FYI, they have a ‘practice’ range in use for these days now. It’s pretty cheap, like $3 for a small bucket of balls. It operates up the top between the first and 18th. Flat grass tee area is between the putting green and the chipping green. It’s purely for ‘warm up’ as distance is impacted by the balls in use and the downhill range layout.
Interesting timing, but I believe there are quite a few grumbles making their way to the club regarding the condition of the greens. This has just arrived via e-mail to members today:
Course Superintendent’s Report to Golf Members
2019 proved to be a year of extremes for maintaining turf.
Early warning signs for a dry hot year were evident from January 2019 with no rain for the month to start the year and no significant rainfall recorded until mid-March. The negative effects on turf health had to be managed during this extended dry period and fortunately the turf recovered with good Autumn rain. During this period our dams were replenished and the course restored in excellent condition.
The golf course was at its peak performance for our premier events during the July – August Championship period and pro-am circuit. Once again, our golf course gritted its teeth and challenged both the membership, professionals, and future professionals around our championship layout.
Following these premier events, the onset of an even more extreme dry period commenced. The golf course only received 80mm of rain in 5 months to the start of December. This put year to date rainfall to the beginning of December to over 400mm below the annual average for the Byron Region. Once again, the turf health began to deteriorate and we were required to manage associated issues. Across the property, the turf began to lose colour and vigour and efforts to combat this were seen to have little effect in restoring turf health.
During these attempts, an underlying problem presented itself as applied nutrition via fertiliser and soil conditioners gained no beneficial results. It is known that Ph and salt lock up nutrients in soil. Historically Ph at OSCC is always around Neutral with salt being our problem. We have tested our irrigation catchment and have seen some alarming results. Salt (Na) has been tested at 2600ppm with ideal levels for optimal growing at less than 400ppm. Follow up testing has revealed salt elevation of up to 4000ppm.
Based on these results, we have implemented a customised maintenance program to offset salt levels and manage chloride in our irrigation water. I am please to report that we currently see consistent (albeit slow) improvement across the property. This customised program will remain in place until dams are replenished and salt levels are reduced to acceptable levels. It’s worth noting that at OSCC salt levels average around 700ppm when dams are full.
The patience of our membership has been greatly appreciated while we continue to do everything in our power to combat these unprecedented conditions and continue to make improvements to our unique and wonderful facility.
2019 has been a year of consolidation regarding capital works. An emphasis on refining the fairways that have been transitioned to sports turf such as the recent 16th hole continues to prove that this turf variety has the ability to combat the dry and elevated salt levels on our property in extreme conditions by maintaining grass cover with only the loss of some colour, and a quick recovery from turf stress.
During the year another 1500m of irrigation main line has been installed. This replaces aging AC pipes (46 years) that have been an ongoing burden with irrigation breaks and system down time. With this work now complete, only holes 3,4,5 and 6 remain to complete the full course mainline replacement.
New initiatives on the property have been implemented in 2019 to encourage sustainability on the golf course. These include the investment in recycling bins, general waste bins, plus their enclosures. Processing of green waste via the large plant Tub Grinder giving the course 12 months’ worth of mulch to care for boundaries and no mow areas. We’re also continuing to establish native plants along the land slump on Strike-a-Like creek following a NSW Fisheries habitat grant. Sustainable initiatives will be continued to be pursued in 2020.
On behalf of all the green staff, we aim to deliver a consistently well-presented golf course for 2020 and please be assured that it is our goal to restore the greens to the firm pure surfaces we are accustomed to. My team and I appreciate the support of the membership through out the challenging year that was 2019.

So, how’d you finish up Weeti?
After your putt on the first, I’d just like to confirm my course report regarding the condition of the greens was accurate.
Also, tell pants I couldn’t find his provisional ball in any of the front yards on Narooma Street. Hope he found his first ball.

You were totally correct about the greens – right up there with the worst greens I have ever played on. I’ve never encountered pot holes on a green before. Never had a putt jump up to knee height either!
Still enjoyed the day although I played like a complete idiot and had 95 net 82.

6/12 fairways – 5 dropped mainly because of 2 attempted to draw the driver on 16 and 18 which both cost 2 shots1 GIR – 1 MD draw wet
3/17 up and downs – the greens were rubbish but that wasn’t the big issue – wasn’t putting them close enough
36 putts – 3 dropped shots and also nothing of note dropped

Much better performance today at Southport. Felt like it could have been a really good round but stumbled after the turn before coming home ok to go 19 17 36 points and 5 over 42 7 over 41 for 12 over 83 off the stick

7/13 fairways + 1 just off – driver was mostly good today, a nice fade. Got lucky on 4 and pushed one that a tree saved from going OOB for only driver drop. Off the tee also dropped 1 from a hooked wet 3h and 1 from a weak hooked 6i into trees
6 GIR – probably the most disappointing part of today was the poorly struck wedges that should have been easy GIR – 3 lobs and 1 pitching which cost me 4 shots. Also dropped 2 shots from poor punch shots (1 went into one of those razor grass bushes 10m in front of me and stayed there – luckily it was preferred lie!). Dropped another from a lost 7i – only 1 as I birdied the re tee for a bogie!
7/15 up and down – a bit better than normal and pretty happy with the short game. Dropped 4 shots – 2 from bunkers, 1 LW chip to 8ft that the putt almost fell, and 1 Texas 8ft short.
27 putts – might be my best ever putting stat and apart from missing 1 5 footer that I pulled and should have made I didn’t drop any shots with putter and made the 30fter for bogie on 14 after losing my 7i first tee shot.
Overall happy with my round apart from those 4 wedge shots.
The calendar we got for Christmas now says “GOLF (am)” on 9th February.
So it’s on like Flynn!Awesome! It’s a lock!
7/15 up and downs on Sunday but only 4 shots dropped? The other 4 were because my approach left me with no realistic chance to get up and down – just had to take my medicine
On 6 pushed LW into a deep short sided bunker. Actually took 2 to get out but didn’t count the 2nd as a dropped shot because unless I dropped a monster putt it was never going go get up and down – the dropped shot went to the lob wedge
On 9 my attempt to draw a LW was thin and over the green on a downslope – was a really good PW chip to about 6ft which I didn’t drop – again the drop was recorded against the LW
On 10 what should have been a very simple GIR was a bladed LW over the green again on a downslope with all sorts of interesting bumps between me and the hole. PW chip was again pretty decent but 15ft short – would have been a miracle to get it inside 3ft. Dropped shot again to the lob.
Finally on 15 my PW was a bit pushed and plugged deep into the side face of the bunker right. Just had to smash it out which I did and it rolled off the other side of the green – which was expected. Drop to PW on that one.
7 made up and downs for me is a very happy story. Made LW chip down on 1 for birdie. Made LW sand save on 3 for par. Almost sunk an eagle Texas on 5, but down for birdie. Almost holed a PW chip on 11 – a foot short right on line and par. A couple of Texas wedges as well. Would like to see this continue and then take another step up.
The other game was a lock too, until my mate had his kid’s party three weeks after her birthday.
I mean who does that?!?I’m in some good form at the moment too.
I only missed 2 fairways at Glades, which was my warm up game for Thursday.
That will then be a continued run into my future home course where the game really counts.
It will be my best game there by a long way.Played Windaroo’s Friday comp today off 12 and had 44 for 16 front and 42 for 18 back for 34 points. Course was in excellent condition especially considering the lack of rain. I always enjoy teeing it up at Windaroo.
8 pars 7 bogies 2 doubles 1 triple
9/14 fairways – drove the ball great, especially on the front. Only blemish on the front was a huge push 4h on 9 way into the river which cost me a shot and left me a long way out for my 3rd shot. On the back put a fade behind trees on 10, and topped a driver on 16. So 3 shots dropped.
9 GIR – not a bad number but missed too many simple ones, and wasted 3 with 3 putts. Lost 2 shots on 9 with 3h push that hit a tree and went into the hazard, and 2 from poor punch shot on 16 and topped 8i on 18.
4/12 up and downs – cost me 3 shots as 4 of them were 3rd shots on the par 5s, and 1 was fine but hit a poor putt. 4/5 Texas was good. Hit most shots decently just wasn’t judging the run and some were too long and some too short.
35 putts + 5 Texas – 4 shots dropped from 3 x 3 putts and missed 1 short one. Was disappointing after a really good putting performance at Southport.
Hopefully will flag but won’t be a great one. SR is 71 vs par 72 and I was 2 below that so at best will be a 13.6 sort of range.
