ParticipantWombat, I didn’t intend to be insulting, just suggesting that you are in the large proportion of the population who don’t like changes.
If your brother can read enough of the scorecard to see where to write the scores, the print size on the phone is much larger, so no problem there.
I’ve not had any problem with my phone locking mid round, but that’s not to say that others might not experience such difficulties and not understand how to overcome them.
Using such an app is not for everyone. But, as you say, when our generation has gone on to greener pastures, all who are left will just accept these things as the only way to do it. The kids of today just don’t use pen & paper.People say that nothing is impossible, but I do nothing every day.

ParticipantI think your sample size is a little small and maybe a little biased. I’m the youngest in my regular group at 53 the oldest is 73 a nd we all like the app a think it has sped up the whole round But I will bow to your great knowledge
Wombat,
Just a couple of points to consider, o your Phone going to screen saver and you having to open it up every 5 minutes, that is dependent on the app, a number of golf apps now put the phone in always “Awake” when they are opened which will remove this issue. On the older golfers needing more than one pair glasses causing a problem. If they have a relative modern smart phone, last 5 years, they can “zoom” the screen using the finger expand process removing this need for multiple glasses. And if this is a problem if you use the accessibility option in settings you can zoom the screen permanently. I know this as we built an app for Guide Dogs Victoria which used this for the severely vision impaired.
Also, I think you may want to consider the current situation which is probably last into the new year when a vaccine is available, the scoring app will help elevate social distancing constraints by not having to congregate in the pro shop to load the score card in. I understand that you are quick on the uptake on filling in the card and do not make mistakes but I am sure that you have been in the queue in the pro shop waiting for a member to enter the score as the reader did not load it properly or they made an error. The app speeds this up and removes these issues. It is not always about the individual benefit but about the collective benefit to the full field of players
The queue in the pro shop is not a problem.
The problem with this app will be the time it takes for the scores to entered after each hole.
For the past few years golfers all over the world have been crying out for an improved pace of play. A few rule changes have been introduced, less time allowed to look for a lost ball, putting with the flagstick in .
All I can see this scoring app doing is holding up play. Delays in the pro shop will always be there….we don’t want more holdups out on the course.
Everyone I’ve spoken to has said exactly the same thing.
I’m sure in 50 years time when all us oldies are dead and gone it will work…..but by then your ball will probably have transmitters to send the score straight to the pro shop computer when it hits the bottom of the hole.May 30, 2020 at 11:34 am #11825DavidM
ParticipantMy club (SLGC) is also using the app. Most are using although not all in favour.
I like it, you can tap the par for the hole (5) then add for your stroke, plus one tap or two.
if your playing partner fails to log your score, it can be looked up on Miscore by the captain.

ParticipantI’ve used the app a few times now and find it pretty handy. I find i can update scores as im walking from green to tee box and not have to stop to ensure I write it neatly. As others have mentioned before, it does the Stableford scoring for you and also gives distances as well if you want a general distance to the green.
I prefer it over a scorecard, and as I have my phone for a personal stats app – having this one open is fine.
I haven’t found any battery related issues with my phone using it either.

ParticipantI’ve used it, its very convenient, if you need to scroll and find the app you arent using it properly, it adds all the scores and points up for you,
Besides some people and battery issues, I am not sure what there is to not like the miclub app,
Hope we have it for nats

ParticipantRemember the people that argued that using a laser rangefinder would slow down rounds?
Seriously, there are literally hundreds of occasions during a round when you have the 10-20 seconds (worst case) available to do the scoring in the app. I’ve been using Golfshot for a loooong time and even with inputting a bunch of stats it doesn’t take more than 10 seconds per hole worst case. Including unlocking the phone.
Adapt to change, don’t resist.

ParticipantInteresting reading that back… I find it speeds it up a lot because you don’t have to stop.. I just complete the score as I am walking to the next tee box.. I don’t think I’ve had to physically stop and stand still to enter a score or check a score once..
The gps is a bit slow to give the distances but once I worked that out I just get my phone out about 30 meters before I arrive to my ball and by the time I have arrived the distance has caught up.

ParticipantWe use the app at our club, I think it is quite simple, you can preset your phones screen lock time, so that’s not an issue, if I’m in a cart, it’s in the drinks holder…. always within reach. Phone still has battery life left at end of day.
Love the live leaderboard aspect also. We use it to gps the hole locations during setup. Much rather use this than the card… always searching for it. Oh I’m above 50 years of age and adaptable to change, if that helps.
There are others in our membership that don’t own mobile phones, but still use gps machines for distance reasons, so for me it’s same sameAugust 9, 2020 at 3:14 pm #13087OldBogey

When compared to my really old Sonocaddie I also use, and to the laser rangefinder.
As for some not having a mobile phone, yes there are luddites around. But most have readily adopted and adapted.
