Our bunkers are shallow and have only a few centimetres of sand. It is never easy to predict what shot will happen, depending upon whether you hit the hard sub- layer with the bounce early and the wedge doesn’t slide under the ball. If it it wet I use the 60/10 CBX2 LW like a chip shot. I will have to use the CBX2 56/12 if I get n the bunkers with the 2 Drivers in the bag.

In summer I intend to use the single length iron set wedges ( Milford Golf SL-7) 56/10 and 60/04 for firmer conditions.

I competed in the Denby U.K. Rotary Club’s fund raising golf competition today. Rotarians world wide can pay $20 to enter and prizes are offered for the best 4 person team score.

    Two steps forward
    1) 8 pars
    2) Hit 7/14 fairways in the middle and only two pitch out sideways / punch out episodes on the others.

    One Step back
    1) three holes with three putts! Two of which were short putts that I tried to steer in , rather than hit it firmly enough to take the break out of the equation.

I played in the rain and winds up to 70 kph this morning.

    Two steps forward

    1) I didn’t miss any short putts today
    2) I was using Cleveland HB Launcher irons ( hollow bodied, super game improvement irons) . They behaved just like any other club in the wind. I just clubbed up and swung at say 75%.

    One step back.
)Even with the wide soled irons,I still managed to fat a couple of shots on the soft fairways.

]How long are the short putts say you are missing.?
    1 grip from hole
    1/2 putter
    1 putter
    2 putters.

Did you miss Right or left.

when you “steered them in” it means you either
    1) de accelerated putter head and ball broke more than you thought.
    2) under read the amount of break and ball stayed straight on the line.

Sorry I thought I answered your questions last night. Obviously it didn’t post.

My miss distance is usually 1 putter length. The deceleration of the putter I think is the problem. It can be mis -reading too, seeing too much or little slope.

When I keep the putter face square and constant speed through the ball the number of misses drops. I can still miss but then I know it was a mis-read.

Our club’s back 9 holes were closed today for maintenance, so I played the front 9 twice. First time I used my clubs ( single length irons) and then with my wife’s new clubs ( variable length Cleveland HB Launchers), plus I was using Nike Vapor Speed drivers. One with 45.5 inch regular flex shaft and the other with 44.5 inch A-flex shaft for comparison.

    Two step forward
    1) I hit 41 on both rounds. I am getting better at recovering from when I make a poor shot.
    2) The HB Launchers are really easy to hit, except I found it hard to get them to fade. It turns out that you have to face the club face at the target, not half way or so between the feet line and the target line. It took me a while to get used to changing ball position for various irons.

    One step back
    1) I am in between R and A flex swing speed wise. I shortened the A-Flex shaft one inch, which made it feel more predictable. It was too whippy prior to shortening it. I added 12gm lead tape to the head to get the swing weight/ balance feel about right, with a slight weight increase to the heel. Distance and control wise I can hit both of the Drivers ( I have 2 heads) equally well.

I think I have a Nike Vapor Speed driver for sale.( regular flex) I am surprised how this 5 year old design performs.

A practice round this morning. I wanted to work on my 160 m shot ( which club is best), irons hitting solid contact, Hybrids in the 160-140 m range, tee shots.

    Two steps forward
    1) 2 drivers ( one for draw, one for fade) seems to be working at the moment. The 12 degree is doing well for draw shots and the 10.5 for fades. My feeling is the 10.5 is the more versatile if I go back to one Driver. Being shorter at 44.5 ” it feels easier to control.

    2) After trying a 20 degree six wood today, it was pretty obvious that my existing 4W and 3H offer better options for long approach shots.

    One Step back

    1) I have been trying to get better strike with my irons, more compression of the ball. Now my distances are all inaccurate(10 m short) Oh well, I can live with an improvement in distance.

It is always a bit of catchup as you improve your swing and then have to figure our how much to adjust on course after watching balls flying past the flag

Better than the alternative feeling though

Well I have returned to playing match play with my mate Tony. This lock down we can use the golf course instead of our home grown version of paddock golf. It would seem that I am better at golf course match play than I was at paddock golf.

    Two steps forward

    1) I hit most fairways off the tee. Only one push shot.
    2) My putting has improved. This was an area Tony had me at a disadvantage. I won by 3 holes, but it was neck to neck until hole 6.

    One step back

    1) First to ten wins our home made trophy. I am 7/9 down. No pressure!

So true. I have been playing the alternative for 3 years.

Then you have the wind factor to consider ( into the wind?, wind assisted shots?, side winds/ do I cut into the right to left wind??? , and vice versa for left to right winds; the joys of coastal Victorian courses!)

I am excited that I am taking a reliable thin divot rather than either picking or fatting the shots. I am even getting a fair distribution of misses long, left and right rather than all short! Still misses, but more GIRs too. All it has taken is playing daily for my daily exercise. My hip and foot are sore, so I need a few days off to recover!

I played 18 this morning with my son in law ( off handicap 6) . I hit a round of 83, but suffering a bit now with a sore right leg.

    Two steps forward
    1) I hit 9/14 fairways in the centre. Much improved.
    2) Putting was much better speed wise. 4 of them dropped for 1 putt/ hole

    One step backwards,

    1) chipping has gone to pot distance control wise. With all our practice areas closed to slow the spread of Covid 19 ( we have no cases locally) I miss the opportunity to develop feel / ladder drill stuff.

I played 18 hole this morning. Mild wind at the start, but built to gusty 45 k.p.h. Sunny at the start, but cooler as the wind turned to westerly.Score 85.( 6 pars, 11 bogeys, one double) I hit 8/14 fairways ( missed 4 left and two right). Hit 3 GIR and 3 up and downs

    Two steps forward
    1) short game was working well. 34 putts. Chipping was better as the game progressed
    2) fairway misses were not too punishing
    One step back
    1) Approach shots 80% short. Possibly the soft fairways contributed ( no run = longer approach shots and little chance of running onto the green)

On my last game I used the 44.5 ” Driver and for half the game sprayed it all over the place.
On a practice game yesterday I was using my 45.5 ” Driver and whacked it down the middle 8/9 fairways!

    Two steps forward
    1) My 45.5″ Driver improved during its period solitary confinement in the shed.
    2) Putting improved again when I didn’t try to over think it.

    One step back
I am still unbalanced by a score card in my pocket

Arccos is a useful tool for tracking golf stats.

    Two steps’
    1) Arccos measures your shots with each club during a game. Once it has enough data it gives you a ” smart distance” which is your shot distance you hit 70% of the time. The data then shows where you have gaps or convergence of club distance. It can be ego denting though.
    2) It reviews your game in five sections ( tee shots, fairway approach, chipping, sand and putting) The latest App update gives a lot more info. This gives you and idea where to practise.

    One step
    1) It doesn’t work well on Android phones, latest app update needs a recent I- phone with IOS 13, misses recording short putts.

I have been working out on the farm cutting out sweet pittosporum, an invasive weed/tree in SW Victoria. I was late getting to the golf course to play a practice round with Adriano. I started on hole 14. Conditions; blustery wind and a Scottish mist, cool 12 degrees.

    Two step forward
    1) I have mastered the chipper club. It looks old, but it works . 37 degrees loft. I was getting my chips on line to the hole and not too far away.
    2) Hitting approach shots into the wind from around 130-150 m I hit quite a few greens in regulation.

    One step back
Tee shots were a bit erratic today/ I guess I got some practice with punch shots though!
