Gee you must be old to remember that stuff. It had more fruit in it than the 1999 bottle if my memory serves me correctly. The ” old red” near its demise was more how the 1999 bottle tasted.
I tell a lie, I fished the bottle out of the recycle bin and it was a 1999 Balnaves ( Coonawarra ) Sparkling Cabernet, not that it makes much difference.

After a day of trimming trees at Adriano’s house and then some garden work at home, Tony, Adriano and I had a hit at 4 p.m.

We played the back 9 holes at Portland, mainly because it was a bit slow on the front 9. I played bogey golf in a fashion; 45 OTS.
I was working on my tee shots and I am happy to report I hit 6/7 fairways ( 191- 208m) . Why is it that the Driver you are about to sell suddenly starts to work? I hit 2/9 GIR and 3 up and downs. 3 pars, 3 bogeys and 3 doubles.

My long approach shots were a bit erratic. I need to practice fade shots to get the start line sorted.

Yep I agree, it’s always the clubs fault.?

I had an idea after the last round. My 7W blasted a few shots up into the 170 m range, which is much the same as the 17 degree 5W . I had put the standard 42.5 inch shaft back in the 5W to get some more control on shot shape. I had been over drawing it with with the 44 inch shaft. What if I adjust the loft to standard ( 18.5) ? I tried it at 18.5 with both shafts and got better shot shape control with both shafts and 10 m extra with the longer shaft ( into a moderate wind so I didn’t measure the distances)
Next game tomorrow will be a test to see if I can use it .

I played the back 9 this afternoon to test the loft change on the 4W. Yep it worked better. I got 186 m with it draw shape ( into the wind) and a 158 m high fade into the wind on the par 3 18th.
Other points: I hit most fairways and did a 225 m tee shot ( best ever) on the 17th hole. Driver into the wind worked better.

Today’s Stableford round started poorly. I made an error in club selection on hole one and the 9 iron shot failed to stick on the green, so I had to chip back on with a LW and made bogey. Hole two ; my tee shot turned over instead of fading. I had to punch out with a hook shape, but it didn’t quite clear the tees on the opposite side. Taking my medicine, I chipped out and made a double bogey. Hole three started out really well. I hit the tee shot 231M , then a 4W shot 171 m. My approach shot had to be low, so I hit an 8 i that went 4 m above the hole. I thought just dribble it down the hill and a 2 putt for par, The dribble was short, the putt was wide and went though. the return putt rolled up to the hole and stopped short. 4 putts! After that I hit a series fo pars and bogey to score 43 OTS for the front 9.

The southerly change came though on the back 9 and I was having trouble keeping the tee shots form going right side. The wind blew my approach shot into the right side bunker on #12. My first escaped shot was too cute and just missed the edge of the green and rolled back, my second one I bladed into the bunker wall and the third went a little too far. Double bogey result. I messed up the tee shot on 13, hitting a tree right side and had to play army golf to score a bogey. 14 was going fine until my approach shot went a little ling and rolled into the base of a tree, Bogey recovery was good outcome all things considered.. I left my tee shot out right on 15 narrowly avoiding OOB. Bogey. Ditto 16 I eft the ball out right, practically OOB again. but hit two good fairways shots to get a double bogey outcome. I made par on 17 and bogey on 18. My putting improved. 46 OTS.

OTS 89. 34 points. crap putting stats ( missed a few short ones) and struggled to hit fairways today. I wasn’t closing the Driver face in time. Maybe it was a good game to make me not miss the Driver. The new one is arriving soon.

    Two steps
    1) I grafted to get points when my shots were off target.
    2) fairway woods worked well

    One step back
Driver was wayward and putting was just off a tad. I rolled the ball over the edge of the hole about 5 times. Close, but no cigar!

Today’s Stableford round was held in reasonably pleasant conditions. It was a little overcast with a light breeze at the start and it cleared as the wind built.

My new Driver ( Cleveland XL) arrived last night, so it was the first game using it. Verdict: I like it.

    I hit 85 OTS ( 41/44) 38 points. 8 pars, 7 bogeys and 3 doubles.

The doubles: two poor FW wood strikes ( I was trying to hit it too hard) and one 3 putt from a sitter! I was mildly peeved!
    I hit 7/14 fairways, 6/18 GIR, 3 up and downs, average approach distance 119m , 34 putts.

Distance off the tee was improved using a 10.5 degree Driver. The launch angle was plenty high enough.
I mucked up one drive though poor technique and had to chip back into play, one I just didn’t hit hard enough to reach a dog leg and the other was a B grade bounce off the fairway into the rough, then army gold ensued.

Oh and the batteries on my cart died during the game too.

    Two steps
    1) More reliable Tee shots.
    2) better putting outcomes

    one step
    1) poor strike on two FW wood cost me shots
    2) iron contact wasn’t great.

Strange days indeed! I think climate change will eventually make SW Victoria the new Queensland ( I should live that long) .
The other day we had what could best be described as a tropical storm. 60 mm of heavy rain in an hour and hail stones that smashed through laser light roofing and damage both my cars and caravan ( slight dents). Then some dry still days with a bit of humidity.

Today I went out to check my cart batteries ( confirmed as dead) and walked 9 holes. No wind, just a hint of a breeze. It feels eerie.
I played the back 9 working on getting used to my new Driver. I hit 6/7 fairways and my average distance was 196m / longest 216 m. I only hit 2/9 GIR as I was approaching from 145 m on average. I missed left and right but mostly pin high. I got up and down 2/7 and total putts 15. it should have been 14, because I missed a very short putt on the 13th hole for a 3 putt.

Arccos is telling me that my Driver distance and approach shots are the reason I am 1.6 strokes off performing at 8 handicap. I agree with the approach shots. Even when I am approaching from closer in, my control of my irons is not great at present. Distance with my Driver I think is pretty good for my age. It is a filter they will no doubt add to Arccos in time.

Now if I can play like this tomorrow in the Vets comp I will be very happy.

Well I didn’t manage to replicate my form. My tee shots were a bit wayward. Not disastrous, but not in the middle of the fairway either. I gave the short 3 Hybrid a good work out with punch shots, 7 iron lateral chips and a few wedges over the trees needed to get back into play. My approach shots got me back into contention and putting worked today.
It was a combined Stableford 2 man team event. My partner had a bad back 9 but came home with a wet sail on the front 9, scoring a series of pars in a row.

    Two steps
    1) chipping and putting worked
    2) punch shots with the single length hybrid worked

    One step back
Driver shot aim was off and my fades either went too far right or not at all.

I did a quick 10 holes before my booster Covid shot this arvo. Geoff from Adelaide is down for a visit for a few days.

I tried to hit my tee shots straight and hit 6/8 fairways. My average drive was 200 m / best 224m . I am happy with that.
4/10 GIR: 2/6 up and downs;18 putts and average approach shot was 118 m.
one birdie, 5 pars, 3 bogeys and one double on a par three ( 3 putted it/ it was very fast in comparison to the other greens)

    OTS 44 .
One thing for sure is that it is easier to hit the greens from 10 m closer after a good tee shot.
I missed the green on hole 1 when I misjudged the club to get to the green with the wind behind me. Used GW and ended 10 m short
I missed the green on hole 2 when my 7 iron shot drifted right and into the bunker with the wind. Pin high though.
Missed the green right just on #3 with 8 iron.
Missed the green right on #4 with GW ( ? wind maybe)
Missed #5 with 4 W tee shot left
on #6 my tee shot went through the dog leg just ( 211m) so I had no shot other than a punch shot out from the trees, but got GIR.
Got GIR with 71 m SW shot
Missed the green on 8 par 3 ( windy hill) and the 6 Hybrid shot blew right by 20 m
Missed the green on #9 with a punch shot from 124 m out, ran through the green.
    Hit the green with a 7 i 128 m out on #10

So in review I am accurate with 9 i and shorter clubs, not bad distance wise with 7 , 8 iron and a bit hit and miss with the 6 Hybrid.
