ParticipantAnother 7 a.m. practice session. I played the back 9 and used Steve Johnson’s Games within the game concept.
First game is “position” form the tee shot, ( twice on par 5 holes) , then the second game is attack the green/ get it on the green , the next game is chipping close ” scoring game”, then the last is the ” end game” ( putt in two).I started OK on hole 10, with a good 203m drive to position ( left of centre), then I hit the green with a 7 i short but it rolled off ( 50% success?) I chipped on with GW but it was short ( 7 m from pin) ( fail) and two putted ( pass). 3/4 result.
Hole11 my tee shot on par 3 went a bit left, but pin high. position check! The next shot was a PW bump and run onto the green ( attack/ check) . I two putts form 3.7m (end/ check) 4/4
Hole 12 192m to middle of FW ( position/ check) . Attack the green with a 180 M 7W shot that rolled a long way onto the green ( attack/ check) Do I get bonus points?? and Two putt from 4.6 m ( end/ check) 4/4 since I didn’t need a scoring shot.
Hole 13 193m Tee shot to left of centre. The a 7 W that caught the wind and only went 147m . ( fail) I had to fade a 8i around the corner trees and just misses the green ( attack / fail) The scoring shot with 3H got me within 1.5 m. I missed the putt but down in 2 , so pass end game. 2/4 score
Hole 14.I hit a longish but straight Drive over the dam, but it rolled off the fairway into the trees right rough. ( fail/ position) My attack shot with the SL 3H low punch got me within 30 m of the green ( Fail/ attack) The 60 degree wedge/ 50% power got onto the green ( scoring / pass) and I two putted form 6.6 m ( pass end game) 2/4 score.
Hole 15 I hit a 190 m Draw shape tee shot to teh dog leg corner ( pass position), the a 155 m 5H ( now set at 23.5 degree) to the green ( attack pass) and two putted form 9.9 m ( end; pass) 4/4 score.
Hole 16 was into the glaring sun. I tried a fade aiming at the left side tree and hit it heel side of centre. Piss poor effort for 179m but it was in a good spot for shot two. I must have hooked / over cooked the second shot 159m ( 4W) and it ended up in the left rough just. I couldn’t see the ball flight ( position/ fail) .I was still about 170 m out , so I thought aim right of the green and hit another 4 W. I got the same result short and hooky. Anyway I used the SW to get the ball on the green. 1.7 m from the pin ( score: pass) and two putted ( end; pass) score 2/4
Hole 17 I hit a good draw 210m to the right side of the fairway ( position; pass) My 8 iron shot pulled a little left of my intended target, but that was where the pin was (Attack; pass). I was aiming right of centre and hoping to draw in back in. I two putted from 4.6m out ( pass) Score 4/4
Hole 18 is a par 3 into the wind 170m to the front of the green. I tried the 4W again and got the same result ( short hook) but it was in the middle . (Position; pass) I used by distance card to select a low bump and run shot and hit the 9 iron 42m but a tad left of my intended line. (Scoring : pass) I two putted from 1.5 m ( end pass) Score 4/4
The 4 mini -games was a bit of fun. I think it helped focus the purpose of each shot. It also reduced my stress level when putting. Thinking that I have two shots, made me relax on the first putt. My misses were small. They will start to drop in soon based on the law of averages.
What did I learn? Adjusting the Cobra F7 hybrid to 23.5 degrees gave me a 155m shot. It was creeping up to the 7W average shot when set at 22 degrees. I took some time on the range after the 9 holes to work out why I am hooking the Cobra F9 4 wood. I was thinking maybe the longer shaft is giving me too much toe up ( lie angle) and heading the shots left? Anyway I tried out that hypothesis by choking down and still got too much draw shape. I eventually worked out that if I lead more with my hands the club face wasn’t closing so quickly and I gained control again.
My next game is Thursday. I hope I see a little improvement.
I too love games to improve on course practice, good stuff keep up the good work.

ParticipantI did it! Well almost played like I was off 8 handicap. I hit an 81 OTS round this morning in the competition.
I managed 1 birdie, 7pars, 10 bogeys and no doubles ( cheering )
I hit 6/14 fairways, 7/18 GIR, 5 /10 up and downs 33 putts ( 3 by 3 putts, 7 by one)Off the tee I pushed about three shots way out right ( lack of a small target in mind?) I had to make a couple of hero shots with the SL 3 H to get back into play.
The three putts were either when I was a long way from the pin on putt#1, or on a very sloping green. I only missed one ” sitter” when I tried to finesse it into the hole and it curved away. So annoying!
Can I do better?
1) close the cub face a bit more on Driver shots to keep it in play.
2) My chip shot accuracy and length can be a little better. ” scoring game”
3) More putts dropped today. If I can avoid three putts completely!!!Two steps forwards
1) Fairway shots 100-170 m worked well attacking the greens
2) “end game” putting was working todayOne step back
I hit the Driver a little too much in the heel section and the ball didn’t draw back / I need to concentrate a bit more on pre-shot routine on the tee.-

ParticipantI forgot. I had another 2 shot penalty today after losing a ball in the leaf litter amongst the trees, after I lost a driver shot out right ( heel strike) on the 6th a hole. We looked for 3 minutes , but could not locate it.
The previous game I got a 2 stroke penalty for hitting another player’s ball on the green while putting. It was an example of being over confident. The nearest the pin marker was almost on my line and I think I was aware that I needed to miss it. My brain caused me to miss it by pulling the ball way off line and down the slope where the other balls were sitting. I won’t make that error again!

ParticipantI went out for a quick practice back 9 holes at 7:30 today. Just for interest, I reviewed how the 4 sections of the “game within a game” concept helped identify problem areas in my game.
1. Position. Did I get my tee shot in a good place to play at the green? 7/9 score. I pulled two tee shots into the left rough area.
2. Attacking the green. Did I hit my approach shot on or very near the green? 5/9 score. I was leaving my iron shots out right today.
3. Scoring shot /chips? 7/9 were close to the pin. I had one putt of 11.8 m and one of 10.1 m.
4. End game; can I get down in 2 putts? Score 8/9. Lag putting was good overall, but I missed 4 putts of about 1.5 m.Was it useful? Yes I think so. It looks as if I need to practice my iron shots to a small target. I don’t generally do that . I need to practice 5 footers . I have been working on 3 footers and have improved.

ParticipantAnother 9 holes this morning before 9 a.m. There was a moderate East wind blowing.
Tee shots to position went well, when I allowed for the wind.
I hit a reasonable fade off the tee on 16, then 19 hybrid to position ( 2nd shot par 5), then “attacked” the green with a 7W that hit the green 160 m out into the wind. I had a long putt back to the pin and a tap in for par ( end game: check)
Yes I like this system.

ParticipantSo near, but no cigar. Today I played 18 holes with my neighbour, an 80 year old local ex-club champion.
I hit an 81 OTS and he kept asking what my handicap was now!9 pars/9 bogeys.
I hit 6 fairways/14 ( 43%) ; TSIP 10; missed 7 left side
6/18 GIR
average approach shot 119m
up and down 3/10
total putts 33 ( 3 one putts from 12.8m, 1.5m, 8.7m) / no 3 putts.2 users liked this post.

ParticipantOh dear! I played Veterans Golf today at Heywood. It was an inter-region competition and 94 players attended. The course was in good condition for this time of the year, with only 1 fairway having sparse grass cover. The pace of play was reasonably slow.
My game didn’t start well on hole 1 . I sent my drive our into the adjacent bush ( 2 shot penalty). In the middle of the game I hit 2 pars, but the 6 double bogeys indicated that I had a shocker.
94 OTS; 2 pars, 10 bogeys, 6 doubles. I hit 8 /14 fairways, but the 6 I missed my start line for Driver shots was off course.
2/18 GIR , 3/14 up and downs, 35 putts.What caused the doubles?
Hole 1: 2 shot penalty
Hole 4: I faded a hybrid tee shot and hit a tree, then failed to get back into play well= 2 shots wasted
Hole 7 : poor chipping ( 2 chips)
Hole 14: 3 putts
Hole 15: 2 chips ( I tried to be too cute with a lob wedge and missed the green short)
Hole 16: I hit a poor tee shot and struggle to get out of the roughFebruary 23, 2022 at 3:21 pm #18154xrman
ParticipantIt must be summer. There is not a cloud in the sky, it is warm and the wind is light on shore, keeping the heat at bay.
I had a 7:30 start on the back 9 for a practice hit. I wanted to concentrate on hitting my drive to position, working on fade shape shots mainly.Hole 10: good position with 187m fade. I attacked the green with a 153m 5 Hybrid shot that went to the back of the green. it left me a long down hill putt. Putt #1 went too far and left a 6 m uphill return= 3 putts for a bogey.
Hole 11: I hit a 6 hybrid too far 159 after a big bounce. I expected 145m, but it was only just right of the rear edge of the green. My scoring chip with my 60W rolled though about 5 m, but I two putted for another bogey. I seem to hit that hybrid right of target.
Hole 12: number one index hole. I hit a good 200 m fade to position, left side of fairway. My attack shot at the green was a ripper 5H 169m . Two putts for a par.
Hole13:I hit a 193m draw and then a 148m 5 H to position on the dogleg corner. I hit my attack shot at the green with my 9i that went further than usual (114m) over the back of the green. Maybe I am clubbing up too much? I tried to roll the ball onto the green with my 3H, but hit it a bit hard. I two putted from 10 m. Bogey result.
Hole 14: I hit a draw 200 m over the water, then attacked the pin form 120m out with a 7 iron, expecting a draw to bring it back into the flag. I chipped on with the 60W, then 2 putted from 4 m.
Hole 15: Tee shot was a slight fade to the corner of the dogleg 190m, then I hit the 7W 177m ( 10 m too far) and had to chip back with the 60W again. I had a 1.5 m putt downhill and just missed. Bogey.
Hole 16: Another 200m fade shot. The ball ended up with a poor lie on the drain line, ball above my feet. With the sun in my eyes, I used my SL 19H and hit and hoped. I must have hooked it a bit, as I found it in the left trees. I hit another shot with the same club and was within 23m of the flag. I hit a GW chip and missed the 1.5 m putt, just.
Hole 17: I hit a good 213m draw to position, then attacked the green with my 7 i from 125m out. I pulled the shot a bit, but 2 putted
Hole 18: Into the glare again . I hit a fade 4W and hit the green. I didn’t see it. 2 putts from 13 m for a par.I hit the Driver way better today. It looks as if I need to use my range finder to measure pin distances rather than rely on my GPS. I hit a few way too long.
