ParticipantI played at Heywood this morning with my son in law and his Dad. It was frigid and foggy until hole 7.
Two steps forward
1) The course favours draw shape tee shots. I did O.K. hitting 8/14 fairways
2) I hit my iron shots well. One step back
I lost 6 shots to 3 putting. The greens were fast and difficult to read. That is the end of my handicap drop progression. Score 97.July 29, 2020 at 9:36 pm #12901Weetbix
ParticipantI dunno
Part or golf is sharing your disappointment and confusion about why your ball goes 90 degrees sideways into the trees and finishes behind a huge root while theirs bounces off the tree and into the middle of the fairwayIf you can luxuriate in your misery and cry angry tears to the Golf Gods you’re missing out on half the fun
Don’t tell me, you have Italian heritage, don’t you Weetbix.
I don’t believe so

ParticipantToday I played 9 holes at my home and scored 43 strokes; no 3 putts!
Two steps forward
1) reliable draw shapes off the tee hit 7/9 fairways
2) putting close to the pin with putt#1One step back
1) having the confidence to trust the tee shot shape will work and aim left or right of centre and allow the ball to return to centre. Both missed fairways were when I went down the centre and the ball turned into the rough.July 31, 2020 at 5:48 am #12942Can break 80

just wondering why is missing fwy in left or right rough a step back.?
were you still able to make a par or bogey from the tee shots which landed in the rough. if a bogey not a problem take that and go to the next hole or are you saying landing in rough cost you a double bogey.from unplayable lie.? then might be problem,a guy from down your way a Marc Leishman only hits on average 52 % of fairways.= 7/14, which is what you hit at heywood.
Jim Furyk one of best ball strikers ever, hits only 76% = 10.5 fwys,
so looks like you are finding fwy more than these guys so well done.probably dont need to work on your driver much more.7/9 fairways means you hit every fwy except par 3’s.

ParticipantOK, I am being hard on my self assessment. I was thinking that those two drives that went astray meant I had to manufacture an escape shot to get the ball back into play. The outcome was pretty good with a punch shot using the 2H under the tree canopy. In reality, I struggle to get a second shot onto those greens ( distance deficit) and the surrounding area of the greens was so soggy that bounce and roll was zero. It was firmer yesterday after a week of dry conditions, but still the ball stops dead but on the surface, not under it.
Then again, comparing my drives to the Pros’ fairway hits is a long bow. Where would mine go if they went another 120 m further!!!
Funny thing with the shots that went wide, I remember thinking how the Draw shape had cut out the right side of the course. I was happy to see it bend as desired, even if it clipped the trees.
I just need to aim a little right of centre as this confidence grows; ditto for fade shapes alignment.1 user liked this post.

ParticipantYou had a 43 for 9 holes which is commendable I suppose.. What is the par for that 9 holes??

36 for each 9 ; front and back. Front is easier in my opinion.

ParticipantI hit a 41 yesterday (front 9) Birdie on the 9th. Warm inner glow!
Later when I reviewed the game I thought my rashness trying for GIR on hole one cost me a chance of breaking 80. I pulled the shot into the weeds under the trees, but pin high. I chopped the ball out with an 8 iron to avoid said tree canopy, but it ran through the green onto a grassy bank. I put it on with a 60degree wedge, but missed the putt. Double bogey to start, but the round got better. Had I tried for a fade on shot #2, it might have rolled on or been a short chip on and saved two shots, but I went for distance with a draw. Oh well!

ParticipantI hit an 82 today. I wondered if I have hit my limit, being twice what my last effort was for 9 holes!
Two steps forward
1) My tee shots were much better in shape and consistency and I even got a 221m total Driver shot.
2) I got my single length 19 degree hybrid to work today. The trick is to play the ball either middle or slightly back of stance. In reality it gives a 3 iron like flight, not a usual Hybrid high trajectory. SL hybrids are in essence designed to replace an iron in the single length set, not as a rescue club only. I used it three times today for partial shots; one punch shot out of the trees, one bump and run from 77 m out and one putter style roll onto the green. One step back
1) 3 putts twice. Second putt was close, but no cigar.August 4, 2020 at 5:39 pm #13014xrman
ParticipantPlaying in swirling winds of 50-60 k.p.h. and hail isn’t a lot of fun.
Two steps forward
1) My iron approach shots were reasonably good shape wise and I hit the back of the greens a few times when I clubbed up to make sure I hit the green.
2) I managed to keep a lot of shots low and out of the wind. One step back
1) 4 by three putts. plus several botched tee shots.

well n the way to the holy grail of 80. well done.
now how to get there.Steps to move forward
players who consistently break 80 rarely 3 putt.
1.more focus on distance control drills with putting, to avoid the 3 and 4 putts.
practice drill from 5m 10m, 15m, aim is to putt ball inside 1m (1 putter length) on all first putts from these distances. ie learn to 2 putt from these distances.2. chip around with green with less loft, a PW. 8I or hybrid will cover most shots
step which will hold you back
1.too much focus has been on distance with clubs,( listening to much to Across)
2. too many DBogeys from aggressive play.keep up the good golf

ParticipantYour advice is most welcome.
I think I need to take very short putts more seriously. I ran one around the rim from 300 mm out yesterday( too fast). The other 3 occasions my second putt ran up to the lip and stopped. The greens were wet and slower than usual. I am getting better at lag putting.
Distance control with short chips was an issue yesterday. Too short mostly. Using less loft is something I will try today, but it will be at a different golf course with faster greens. Hybrid is a possible solution with a putting action. I usually use GW, Pw, 9i from further out.

ParticipantI played at Heywood Golf Course today. It was cold and rained intermittently. It had obviously rained a lot since last week as the fairways had turns to mush. I wanted to evaluate a set of clubs I have been acquiring for my wife’s upcoming birthday.
Two steps forward
1) The 14 degree GX7 mini Driver was a reliable club off the tee for draw shaped shots.
2) I eventually got used to playing variable length irons again. The Cleveland HB Launcher irons were pretty good on the soft conditions. One step back
1) The use of a 4 degree bounce in the mud was a big messy mistake.
2) I had to play without my glasses because of fogging issues wearing a mask.August 7, 2020 at 5:58 pm #13054Weetbix
