Over in ‘community business’, I started a thread for the lurkers to post up why they are not contributing.

    See here:

    @crankyscott
replied and posited a question at the end of his post which has me thinking…

    Hence, this thread.

    So, why do YOU golf?

When I was 15 or 16, Dad told me I had to choose one sport to play because two in one weekend was too much.
I was playing soccer at that time and was training with the Reserves in the pre-season so I was probably going to be in a new team away from my mates anyway.
I’m not sure if Dad was convincing enough or he made the decision for me in the end, but I started playing golf properly instead.
After what was another 15 or so years of every Saturday with Dad it became ritual that meant so much more to me than just winning a ball and dropping handicaps.

I think I live in the camp of “does not play” anymore, rather I squeeze a game in every few months when it works with my family.
I play because I miss what I had, I get to choose who and where I play with more so now so I play with those who are special to me, I love to stay challenged in thinking I am still as good as what I used to be, I love being with those who know what it means to me to be out there playing.

I really enjoy the social aspect of the game and getting to play with my son once a week. Other than that, I must have some underlying basic masochistic needs. I mean, what other reason could there be for putting yourself through 4 to 41/2 hrs of mental anguish followed by a further 8 hours of hardly being able to move due to the sore back, knees and calves. Oh and of course there is the ever present opportunity to Drink More Beer!!!!

Having time with the caddie, her driving the cart on our outings, is great dad n daughter time, so yeah, there’s that aspect for me.

I also use it for health benefits too. Exercise, walking around, moving the body in different ways. Fits well with my surfing since the ocean is better with offshore winds, and it’s nearly always onshore by mid morning to lunchtime. I can golf in the afternoon and into the evening which also stops me just sitting home, or gardening, which always involves drinking a few beers.

But, the big thing for me is having goals to achieve. I’m happiest when working toward something. Hence, my desire to improve my swing, and game. I get frustrated but also enjoyment. Two edges of the same razor.

The exercise and improvement aspects keep my mental health in check too. With my work being all in my head aka “knowledge worker”, doing physical things is really important for balance.

As a teen, I found Tennis was the sport I excelled at. Lots of coaching training, comps all weekend, even doing some coaching meant I had a deep understanding of the technical side of the game. My 1st golf lesson occurred only last year, probably too late ?

I found golf to be free of all this structure for me. I love the non combative side of playing, beautiful environment and the good people we meet. It’s the only game that truly feeds my soul…
And the beer is always good afterwards, eh Commish.. ?

As a young fella I used to caddy for my dad during his Saturday games at a new club called Wakehurst. At the age of 12 dad signed me up as a Cadet member, used to play every Saturday and Sunday. Eventually moved into junior ranks taking on the Junior Captain role, then into senior membership serving on the match committee…that grounding gave me the mental tools needed to enjoy every second on the course.

But the reason I enjoy it now is that the Golf Course is the only place in the world I can go to shut out the rest of the my life and just think about the game I’m playing…nothing else, good or bad, going on in my life crosses my mind for a second when I’m out there…it’s my Zen place….and I love it!

I was brought up with Cricket in the summer and footy in the winter. When I joined “The Job” I found it difficult to get my weekends off so I thought I needed to play a sport that I could play during the spare time I get. If needed I could play by myself and didn’t need others to play.

Now golf is my exercise and release from the presssures of life/work etc. Sometimes I wonder why I think it releases the stresses, as it can add to them, but in the end (as Barneski says) it blocks out all the other things of life for those 4 or 5 hours.

I started playing a bit more once I started greenkeeping. I guess it makes sense to understand what a golfer sees out in the course. Only play once per month, may sneak in a second game on the odd occasion. Play a few games with eldest son, live watching him hit a ball. Youngest has talent, but doesn’t play a lot …

    Yep.
I see where you are coming from you salsa swaggering swordsman. I inadvertently did not mention the word golf in my post due to the heading of the thread. The masochistic part…. well, I am convinced that golf was invented by a Sadist for the sole purpose of satisfying Masochists. Plus, as you well know, I really don’t need any form of reason to have another beer.

Apart from that… HOW THE FARK ARE YA!!!!!!

I certainly share the setiments of others here in saying that golf is a few hours away from the noise that life can throw at you.
I farkin live for weekends and that 5.30am alarm that signals the start of a golf day.

I also keep coming back in the hope that the next round is the one where every aspect of my game fires on the same day. It’s the search for that one perfect round where you can say you were happy with every shot off the tee, every shot through the green and every putt.

Pretty sure I’ll need to be physically active and capable until the age of about 230 before I experience this, but hey, it keeps me coming back.
