ParticipantA quick update, well not quick really, as it’s actually more like a year’s worth of waiting ……..
Having had to wait several months for my driver to arrive, then 8 months for my irons to be made, another 3 months for my wedges to be completed, I can now top that lot, with the wait I have just endured.
A good long while ago I asked our Wilson Rep about ordering in a putter for me. Now this isn’t any old putter, it is in fact the reincarnation of Wilson’s famous 8802 putter …… and extreme toe hang putter, used and designed originally by Arnold Palmer way back in the early 60’s.
Wilson re-released a modern version of this classic putter design 50 years later in 2014, and so after trying out a right handed version which we’d ordered for the shop, I was after one for myself.
So a little over a year and half ago now, I put in my request. Unfortunately, according to our Wilson Rep, they didn’t make it in left handed I was told.
Fast forward a few months later, and imagine my surprise when one day I spotted a left handed one on ebay that was up for sale in the US.
So, armed with a photo of said left handed putter I showed the Wilson Rep the next time he came in. He said he’d find out for me, and a month later he informed me that for me to get a lefty into the country we’d have to order in 50 of them from the U.S. .(so that wasn’t going to happen).
By then of course, the one on the bay of e had long since gone. Since my initial inquiry, I’d been using the right handed one in the shop to practice my putting with whenever the place was quiet, and I really loved the feel of it.
As soon as my “practice putter” sold, I would immediately order in another one, and I reckon I’ve sold half a dozen of them over the duration.
So ……. it wasn’t until June this year that another one appeared on the bay of e, over in the US of A …… and it was a putter that had only been used on the practice green and not in a round, so it was pretty much pristine.
The bidding was pretty keen over the next few days, but with a large bid at 6:15am one Sunday morning back in June ….. I did secure it.
Therein has followed yet another long wait, of a month and a half for it to actually turn up, (thanks covid19) but just the other day, there was finally ……….. a nice parcel leaning by the front door.
It is as described, in pristine condition, and the leftie version feels just as silky smooth as the right handed version on my putting carpet out in the garage.
Now all I need though is access to an actual golf course at some stage to give it a real test.
And as they say ……… good things come to those that wait ……..

ParticipantAnyone interested in a review on a 2002 model of Maxfli A10 Tour Limiteds?
They’re good.
They were one of the early progressive sets with the combo of cavity back in 3-5 irons, what would be described now as a muscle back in 6-7 and blades in 8-SW.
They’re so good that even after this long I have zero desire to look to replace them.
Living in iron covers since day one, there’s no bag chatter even with the Ni/Chrome outer layer.iron covers ……… I’ll say no more.

ParticipantMGI Navigator, you say.
I have two comments.
Great choice.
You old.
I may be old ……. but I still have a 3 iron in my bag.

Participantso I’ll give my new electric buggy a run. I decided it was time try just walking the course and not pushing a cart through the slush, so I got myself a shiny new remote controlled MGI Navigator. Hopefully I can keep it from falling into bunkers or running off from me tomorrow, but it should be fun and something different. The heavy Wilson staff bag fits on it nicely, so its in for a good workout first up.
Did you get a good price at Drummonds?
I did yes Frank. I am after all a Drummond Club member.
And yes Goldy, they are a bloody good choice I reckon ….. so long as you can find them these days.
Buggy’s both electric and the push varieties are getting scarce these days as everyone wants one, and they take a good long while to get into the country, so stocks are very very low out there atm.

ParticipantUpdate time of sorts.
Playing as two’s these days, under strict lock-down, no comps, and a lot of social distancing ……. so I’ve not really noticed much difference from my usual routine, aside from saving $8 a round these days.
Officially now, I don’t have to hand a scorecard in, which is a great thing I reckon. Perhaps I’m an environmentalist at heart, as scorecards have always seemed t be such a bloody chore in the past ……… as most would realise by now, I’d much rather just do without them, so its another step in the right direction I believe.
So its another midweek day off tomorrow, and it should be half decent conditions, so I’ll give my new electric buggy a run.
In more golfing news though, my game has been ticking along as usual. When I hit the shots I should do, I play okay and get close to par, and when I just hit the shots I want to try I don’t score anywhere near the same . so its good fun, with just the odd serious round thrown in at times.
For a while I’ve had no confidence on the greens as I’ve been rapidly falling out of love with the putter. With no decent left handed putters around for me to try, I was just getting frustrated, but the other day I was rummaging around in the golf cupboards and found an old Odyssey white ice blade jobby, and threw it into the bag.
It turned out the best I’ve putted in months with more than a few 10-15 footers dropping during my last social round . so its in the bag for a while now I think, joining my two Cobra wood clubs and my 11 Wilson irons / wedges.
So that’s about my update done and dusted. I’m still on the lookout for another club to join, as Beacy is getting a touch tiresome at times. I’ll need to give it more thought once these pasky restrictions are lifted and we can actually get out and about and play a few potential courses, but thats for the future ……

ParticipantPlayed the North course back when the weather was decent late last year.
The practice green is at least a quarter acre in size, and its manicured to perfection, so you get a good idea of what its going to be like.
Placement off the tee is the key to getting around as there are some very tight holes particularly at driver distance (bunkers encroaching), there is great conditioning all over the joint though, as they have spent more than the odd sheckle or two on it.
The greens are big, swaley, but subtle and offer a host of pin positions..
Highlight hole for me was the shortish par 4 18th, a dogleg left, which gives you the choice of multiple teeing off clubs, and a big fairway bunker on the inside corner, to avoid. The tee shot is followed by a mid to short iron into an “amphitheatre style” green surrounded by bunkers, which sits right below the clubhouse windows. Just a bloody fun hole to play and a great end to the round.
Well worth the drive down to Franghanistan I thought ….

ParticipantPlayed this morning on my day off, in just slightly less than ideal conditions.
A touch of cold air, and more than a drop or two of precipitation throughout the round. Some good shots were struck, but they were few and far between and were interspersed with too much rubbish.
I’ve tweaked the Cobra F9 driver a touch of late and am getting used to its differences. It’s a touch shorter now, the grip has also been on a diet, and the clubs loft setting is down to about 7.5 or 8.
I’ve also introduced a bit more body tilt when hitting off the tee, and gone with the 3 1/4 inch tees, rather than my usual 4 inch tees for the driver.
The reasons being, previously without much body tilt away from the target, I was hitting closer to the low point of my swing, swinging flatter, losing loft, and adding sidespin (hence previously using 4 inch tees to try and alleviate that issue and force myself to hit on the up).
The new method does show some promise, I hit a few nice launching ones today, and they flew nice and long (there is no run on the course at all with it being very damp underfoot). I have a few issues with the clubface at impact in getting it set just right (a couple of big draws), but its a visual thing at address. I need to set the angle of the clubface correctly at address and good things happen . if I have it closed a touch, then look out hook …… so its just getting used to that visual cue of the clubface and how it should sit at address in order to make it repeatable and predictable.
My irons were not too bad today, I hit some nice ones despite the conditions, but I got penalised on at least 3 approach shots where I flushed them onto the green by a few metres, only to see them spin back off and down the sloping front fringes. In fact the only time they didn’t spin back was when I put a couple past the pin ……… much to my annoyance.
Pro V1X …… nice balls though despite spinning a lot or not at all.
Putting and chipping were just woeful today, and led to at least 4 wipes from memory. I wasn’t that fussed though, I was just happy to be out there having a hit on my day off. I’ve long since stopped worrying about my score, preferring just to enjoy a round and the fun or challenging shots it might occasionally offer up.
In other news though, my regular playing partner and I may be looking for a different home of golf later on in the year when the membership is up for renewal.
I reckon I’m starting to get over the soft wintery conditions and will possible be looking for firmer, greener pastures, particularly a landscape which has maybe more than 7 bunkers and is truly playable all year around.
Having been at Beacy for around 8 or 9 years, I reckon its time for a change, but where to go …. that’s the question. I had thought of Cranbourne but I see that’s in the news this very evening, as someone has carved swastika’s into some of their greens. I don’t mean to cast nasturtiums at anyone, but a few former Beacy members have moved to Cranny recently, so if I were the boys in blue, they would be a good place to start!!.
That being said, its not a course I’d really entertain. We are sussing out the memberships of various other courses, and there is not much between a few of them, notably Keysie, Sandhurst, Settlers Run in terms of cost etc. (A Keysie membership does come with some baggage I believe), as well as being a bugger of a spot to get to.
One of the things I’m used to, is pretty much getting to play when I want, eg early morning etc, so that is a factor to consider.
Other possible courses involve more of a drive, and that being the case, that may get a tad annoying or monotonous, so at this stage there is no preferred option leaping out of the pack. The old membership doesn’t run out til about October anyway, so we have plenty of time to consider all of them, and try a few.
Anyway, that’s enough to ponder for one evening, time to go load some decent music clips on the tube of you, whilst the Beloved’s busy watching Home and Bloody Away ……..

ParticipantMore rubbish today, but instead of the full swing it was the putter than cost me
Off 7 at Ashgrove had 27 points with 1 birdie 3 pars 11 bodies 3 doubles
5/10 fairways but only cost me 1 shot
6 GIR and dropped 2 shots each from poor wedges and poor irons – well poor results, the actual shots weren’t far off3/15 up and down – it cost me 5 shots as many of them were not realistic up and down opportunities
38 putts – 5 3 putts and 2 other misses inside 3ft – 4 of the 3 putts were from missing from 3ft or less as well
Should have been at least 32 points today – time to get the putting mat out
11’s an impressive number of bodies to have racked up.
Carl Williams, eat your heart out.

ParticipantI’m depressed.
Every page you turn on this site, there is farking Charlotte Dawson and co…… enough of the repeated threads at the top of every single section of the forum.
Every time you go to a new section you’ve got “page down” to escape the boring old crap that you don’t ever want to read.
Just my thoughts ….

ParticipantQuick update.
I’m officially booked in for golf for Thursday and Saturday, so I’ll get the feel of real grass under my feet for change (and grass that I don’t have to mow.)
It should be interesting, seeing the swings of my regular playing partners after a couple of months hiatus. I’m sure there will be a few stiff bodies, post our first round back.
I’ve been lucky in that I’ve probably played at least “a round of golf a day” during this enforced shutdown, and my only real concern should be my putting …. but putting doesn’t effect your score much does it????
Having had no shortage of actual golf swings, the good bit for me really will be in “getting the band back together” and to continue the fun, banter, and sledging. That’s where the real enjoyment has always been, and I reckon I’m not alone in that.
