ParticipantI’ve had short game lessons – chipping and putting – and am happy enough with contact with lower lifted clubs. Confidence to make the needed swing with higher lofted clubs will come in time.
Hi Weetbix.
Can you elaborate more on the above. Needed swings? Are you talking about partial shots for wedges etc?
I have seen golfers who use the o’clock swing system for partial swings, and also those who use the butt end of the club pointing to a series of ” spots” on the ground on their back swing, and those who control distance by every shot back swing going to 9 o’clock and then controlling distance by the amount of through swing.
I tried them all, but my results varied a lot. Probably because the amount of oomph varied with my swing. I am getting better with tempo slowly ( pun intended). So what I am using now is a system based on feel. I swing what feels like 25% / 50% 75% 100% effort and record the shot distance. Roll can vary seasonally, as can carry on dense air days; but so far I am finding it more reproducible.
It gives me confidence to be able to measure the shot distance and refer to my distance card and look for a club that will give me the distance at a certain % swing, rather than eyeballing it and doing it by feel.

ParticipantI have achieved my eoy goal with an index of 17.0
Forgive my ignorance, but what does a index of 17.0 mean O.B.?

ParticipantI read the title of this thread and thought, ” That’s a bit personal” , but I was relieved to find out you guys were discussing Driver shot length. Otherwise I would have felt a bit reluctant to contribute. I don’t like making others feel inadequate.

ParticipantVets golf at Casterton ( rural Vic) on a bright sunny day with just a hint of breeze. Best day for months.
The fairways had dried out ,but the greens were well watered. Perhaps a little too well watered if you consider the mud in the traps!
I had to re- learn about hitting of very bare lies, so after a good start my irons got a little erratic distance wise. Tee shots were mainly in play, if not the best shape or distance. A few rolled off the fairway into the tree trash. No snakes today! Putting was a bit off on distance control, but only one three putt today.Score 93. 33 points. Still waiting for another break through round like last month when I hit an 82. Maybe today?

ParticipantHeywood in western Victoria is a lovely course with well watered grass fairways ( so far this summer) and good greens. The rough is punishing, so it is best to keep the ball in play. Lots of wildlife on view, such as koalas , roos and emus. It is an undulating course that challenges players to score well.

ParticipantWell I dropped to 18 without much effort after the new handicap system was introduced.
Then I hit a 99 on a course I am unfamiliar with, plus I had a crap day on the greens.
Yesterday I hit 82 back on my home course and I could do no wrong. Well actually I could, but I got a few lucky breaks.
One step forward, two steps back for me.1 user liked this post.
