Would super-sized holes save golf?
GOLF is suffering from fewer members playing fewer rounds. Some golf clubs are implementing radical ideas to get more people to start playing.
A number of golf clubs are looking at the idea of supersized holes. That would make the standard golf hole size of almost 11 centimetres (4.25 inches) expand to around 40 centimetres in diameter (15 inches).
Daniel Delaney, the golf manager at Morley Hayes Golf Club in England, says his club has started experimenting with the larger holes.
“A lot of people can get into golf but then think this is too hard so they go off and do something different,” he told the BBC. “We need to keep people motivated, keep their interest in the game and make it a bit more fun for them so they continue to play.”
Dozens of golf clubs are closing their doors as lifestyles change and people have less time to spend on the weekend walking up fairways.
